Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

Sometimes Sashiko gets a second name as “Slow Stitching”. It is true that Sashiko is slow in comparison to modern sewing because every stitch is made by hand. However, focusing on “Slowness” is not what Sashiko originally does. In fact, “slow” wasn’t something to be proud of in a situation when a person had to stitch for their survival. We appreciate the choice of stitching slowly, but learning stories behind the word is very important – especially before defining the word with adding another value based on someone’s convenience.

☆

Some say our stitches are “intimidating”. Well, I am sad that they feel that way because once they learn the Sashiko we practice, these stitches will be “normal” – we rarely stitch one by one with eyes, controlling our hands, and following someone’s rules. If you try to control, follow the “rules” and judgemental (to the stitchers), yes, I understand that it can be intimidating – yet, I am here to share how “easy” it is – and there are so many who can proof what I am saying by them doing the exact same thing. You can do it when you learn the “form (Kata)” appropriately instead of learning the “answers” to judge a result.

☆

I am trying 100 meters of Sashiko Stitching. It is NOT 100 stitches – it is 100 meters – the project I often stitch on in my Sashiko Live Streaming. If I focus on the result, when I judge my “one stitch”, it will take my life-time to complete. I believe I can show the result sometime in 2023. I understand that learning something new can be scary – but please try to learn “it (Kata for Unshin)” from “the teacher” who knows what they are teaching.

Online Class is available for Oct/Nov 2023!

Originally, Japanese practiced Sashiko in harsh conditions with limited resources. They didn’t have choices to “replace” fabrics. Holding the precious, yet roughly woven fabric, they stitch to make fabric last long. I imagine… they wished they would have enough resources to replace fabric. They didn’t want her family to look…

(From yesterdays’ post). According to their reply, they felt intimidated because of the gap (they feel) between what they can/cannot do & what they see. The amount of stitching we do didn’t encourage them to enjoy Sashiko as they defined it would be “impossible”. ☆ Please be advised that this…

There is no such a thing as “Right Sashiko” or “Wrong Sashiko”. However, there is the “Classic Way” of Sashiko, which we can find from Books/Documents published 50~60 years ago. We may call it “Traditional”, but it doesn’t mean “old” or “in the Past”. Unfortunately, the line of this “Classic…

Thank you for clarifying that. Sashiko for me is a very long process that I love but I’m a learner but I’m getting better and can see how it could become a lot easier if I followed the true way of doing sashiko. So in awe of traditional work

Thank you for sharing. I learned something new every time. I found these days every traditional handwork is modernized. We are forgetting to learn the basics and why it was done. There is a history behind everything we do today. I love to read your post.❤️

Thank you. Very interesting to learn about Sashiko and the imposition of another value. Hand stitching is slow by comparison to machine sewing. This is neither a virtue nor a recent phenomenon. It just is. I’ve just begun reading about this form of stitching and would like to take classes if they become available.
