As a Japanese living Western Culture, one of the difficult questions is: [What is your religion?]. I used to say, [I don’t have it]. Then, I realize they consider me “Atheist”, which isn’t accurate. I believe in “something”, but that “something” isn’t defined by Western Culture so easily. For me, Shinto isn’t a religion. It doesn’t have any symbol to be believed to, or any “teaching” to follow. Shinto is more like a practice & propriety. Buddhism is known as religion, but for me, it is also more like a practice (but more structured “teaching” to follow). Shinto & Buddhism have been the foundation of Japanese culture, and Sashiko is hugely influenced by these. When I ask my Japanese Sashiko friends if Sashiko is more like in Shinto or Buddhism, all of them answered it is leaning toward Shinto concept… and therefore, I say, mixing Sashiko & Zen without basic understanding is dangerous, and very violent to the culture.

Sashiko carries the essence of “Zen”, but Sashiko is NOT equal to “Zen-Stitching”. By defining words so easily based on how they sound (for marketing), they are suppressing the voice from history. Sashiko can be “Zen-like”, Meditative, and Mindful – but they are by-products, not the essence of its practice. Am I overreacting to just “word usage”? Well, look how many think they know the whole picture of foreign culture without even spending enough time to learn. I do not want it to be repeated in Sashiko.

I’d be very interested in learning how Sashiko reflects Shinto ideas if you are willing to share in future posts.
