Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

While reading articles about Sashiko, accompanied by photos, I often come across phrases like “Surviving Example.” These articles tend to revere the beauty and wisdom of “Traditional Sashiko” from half a century ago, implying a significant divide between “Traditional Sashiko” and “Modern Sashiko.” While differences exist, both traditional and modern Sashiko coexist simultaneously.
☆
It is essential to learn from the past, but I believe it is even more important to learn from those who carry the past forward. For some, it may feel inconvenient to learn from someone who is still alive, but Sashiko is very much “alive.” Please don’t reduce it to something only from the past by saying we can only learn from history.
☆
In three weeks, I will be in Japan to lead the “Sashiko Japan Tour (Retreat).” The goal of this retreat is to learn from “today’s active Sashiko artisans” who may not have a platform to speak out or may prefer not to be as public as I am here. We also offer a space (Ibasho) where visitors can come to see the Sashiko we practice today. We call it an “Exhibit,” but there is no difference between what we wear & what we exhibit. Visitors are encouraged to touch them, and when possible, we even want people to wear them (when time allows).
☆
It is my hope to continue offering the Sashiko Japan Retreat, as it feels like my mission. I will share more photos from the Retreat as we approach November.

This is a note for Keiko’s exhibition in Aichi Prefecture. It would be a great opportunity to see, touch, and enjoy Keiko’s Sashiko Works. A workshop by Keiko is available on 3/16, but the participant needs to be able to communicate in Japanese. One day, we will bring ourselves to…

I usually wear only one denim pants when I go out – the denim with Sashiko stitching. A girl asked me, “Why do you always wear the same pants?”. I replied, “Is it strange? Does it smell bad? I try to clean as much as I can.” She continued, “No,…

This weekend, I was supposed to be teaching the Sashiko Workshop in a beautiful Saori Weaving Studio in NYC (@loopoftheloom). This strongly reminds me how the world has changed. It is quite sad. I do not know when I can offer the in-person workshop next. We all have to adjust…
