Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

The essence of Sashiko exists in the ordinary. Since it is ordinary, I often wonder what to teach. It is too ordinary for me to describe, even including “How to”. Often, what I find as a trifling matter can be someone’s wish to learn. In contrast, what I really want to learn can be someone’s ordinary. That’s the real fun part of cross-cultural learning.

☆

Long Story Short, finally, I am preparing the “Applied” Version of Online Sashiko Class. It is NOT an “advanced” version. The whole core & essence of Sashiko is completed in the Online Sashiko Class (Core & Essence). This new Online Class is based on the idea of my new workshop in QuiltCon, “Application & Practice”, saying [Let’s apply what we learn to have more fun].

☆

It is a great process of finding what I have received. It is my big privilege to receive so many stories (and a bit of technique). Therefore, I feel responsible to speak up: even teach so that I can be proud of myself in front of those who never spoke up about passing down Sashiko, yet spend their life & pride in Sashiko.

While I prepare some food for tomorrow & Christmas, I edit many photos I took. It sometimes look like that the Sashiko is the hand-stitched. Of course, it is hand stitched, and looks so precise. There isn’t such a thing as “perfect Sashiko” but there are inspiring Sashiko the human,…

We believe the fabric talk. Some fabric narrates its stories. I sometimes feel it is nonsense to discuss what is “right” in Sashiko. The stitches show who we are. Therefore, I share the importance of the process in Sashiko. ☆ My stories aren’t much from books although I love books….

It is extremely important to understand & get familiar with the concept of “Justice” when an Asian like me (who grew up in an old-fashioned way) tries to adapt to the Western Culture. In a society built on Monotheism (with Absolute God), the “Correct Answer” often exists. I am not…

I like your approach more and more. I learned embroidery from my grandmother, and from her stories of her own mother embroidering. It was just a part of life. Then I studied folk costumes of various ethnic groups, and drew embroideries as a part of illustrations I made. Its always that the story behind it is a part of the stitch itself. And the story usually is about frugality, beliefs, magic, hardships, long winters, costs and time consuming process of making a garmet. Thank you for sharing your stories and respect towards them.
