One of our Boro pieces Sold. I sincerely appreciate the understanding from the customer. It helps us make another Boro again.

The word “Boro” start having a power recently. It originally means “A piece of Rag”. It sometime communicate “failure”, so it wasn’t the positive (valued) word. Yet, the word found the beauty in its repetitive mending in necessity. We can get a Boro pieces, made a few hundreds years go, in an antique market. ☆
As much as there are beautiful Boro pieces from the Japanese history, there is a pile of “fabric couldn’t be Boro” in the market. Some of are too small, too dirty, too fragile. With Sashiko experience, we “revive” those “Boro-to-be fabric” after washing thoroughly in order to wash off the unnecessary dust and lint. Somtimes, the fabric loses its 50% of weight after washing (50% of the value went into the drain… ah.) After we clean them, we do Sashiko on it for layering, mending, strengthening and decorating the Fabric. The repetition of these stitching becomes Boro – and we call it “Fresh Boro”. Because of these process, we need to price it pretty high for a piece of fabric, yet we are so fortunate that there are people who appreciate these work and fabric. I don’t have the solid definition for the Boro yet. Strictly speaking, our Boro may not be Boro because it was not stitched 200 years ago. However, we try to follow the practice what the Japanese probably (could have) done in the history. One of a kind, and so energetic fabric by our hands.

It is an honor to be included to the talk-event offered by @SelvedgeMagazine Japanese Textiles (I didn’t know “PechaKucha” was such a famous word in English.) It was challenging to summarize our Sashiko into 20 slides in 20 seconds each… but, I believe I could condense the essence of what…

In the last 3 days, I took “days off”. I did everything as normal – answering the emails, and main job as house-making. What I meant “days off” is that I did not spend so much time on “Introducing Sashiko”. I had spent my time reading what I wanted to…

One of my challenging projects is to make Sashiko on the acutual garment, instead of patching or repairing it with Sashiko fabric. I first thought of stitching Asano-ha pattern, but my fingers screams for the pain… let’s see if I can go further. デニムのジャケットに直接刺し子。 それなりに着古したデニムだけど、まー固い。麻の葉刺すつもりが、途中で指が限界に(笑)さてどうしましょ。 2017-07-24 16:16:22 Source
