Doubt what you know first in order to pass down the culture in the “original” form. ☆
“Sashiko is a technique of Japanese visible mending”. If you read what I share, you understand this statement doesn’t describe the whole picture of Sashiko. The “words” are very convenient, but sometimes risky. The words often do not describe the whole, especially in Japanese culture. “Sashiko is a mending technique” is as rough as “Wabi-Sabi is about imperfection”. Both of them are NOT incorrect, but insufficient. In order to explain a culture by words, a pile of stories should be introduced along.
☆
In my understanding, Sashiko is a form of “Invisible Mending”, and it turns out visible mending after so many non-Sashiko stitchers jumped in the culture. Well, you know what I am talking about. If not, please read the posts in the last several months. (The summary of many stories are on Patreon – thank you for supporting our journey!). Sashiko is more than a few sentences 😀

My mother Keiko doesn’t like showing the “process” of her works, either Stitching, Dyeing or even Cooking. Now, I understand why she doesn’t like it while I share my no-editing stitching in Live Streaming. The explanation for her preference in “Not Showing” is going to be a long story, so…

Simple running stitch with symmetric patters on indigo fabric. Simple yet powerful artwork. I like both traditional and contemporary Sashiko シンプルに藍染布と生成りの刺し子糸で。シンプルでも深みが出るのが刺し子です。パッチワークもシンプルな作品もどちらも好きです。 2017-09-01 00:53:08 Source

Sashiko is indeed simple. Anyone can do that. However, it isn’t shallow. Simple doesn’t mean “easy to be masterful”. I don’t consider myself a master either. ☆ Stitching with interesting pattern is nice (like embroidery). I also would like to share the beauty created by simple running stitch & beautiful…

There is a line from a song by the Indigo Girls that says “with every lesson learned, another like upon your face” I like to think of visible mending in the same way…
