Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

I always wanted to be “someone else”. In my childhood, Sashiko artisans told me

atsushijp, 2021年1月27日

I always wanted to be “someone else”. In my childhood, Sashiko artisans told me my future as the Sashiko “leader”. I didn’t want to take over the responsibility. Sashiko wasn’t my passion. Even after I made a commitment to Sashiko, those “I wish I were” moments often bothered me.

☆

M.D., Atty, Engineer and Investor… I wanted to be someone who would make a lot of money. I believed the amount of money could define happiness. It is an inevitable truth that Money is important. I worked hard to get a degree in the US… after all, I wasn’t smart enough to be any one of those. Well… accurately, I wasn’t brave enough to “stake my life” to be someone else. I was just afraid of letting “it (Sashiko)” go, and I prepared myself to be dragged back here. I kept whining with my excuses to not be someone else.

☆

I still wish to be someone else occasionally. However, it is more like reading fiction now. I know who I am. This is my life. Therefore, from my experience, I want to make a “place” where people can belong, where people can appreciate “who we are” without worrying about “what we can do”. Sashiko can make such a place when the people there mutually understand what Sashiko really is. Not only superficial “Oh, I love how it looks” flattering, but a place filled with respect where we do not have to care about each other much because we already know we care enough. We may call it “family” – and “good friends”.

☆

I cannot contribute to society by innovation, Law, Medicine nor Money. However, I can contribute to society by sharing some wisdom. Why Hand-Stitch? Why Sashiko? There are many stories for what I share. There is no absolute answer. Keep look forward. There are always something we can do. Enjoy Sashiko.

When I decided (& told my family & friends) that I will no longer purchase new clothing, I did Sashiko on the most favorite denim I had. I regularly wear this Denim pants, and after a few years, it got a whole around the leg bottom. No major wear and…

“Story” isn’t only for entertainment – it often comes with wisdom. Stories carry the reasons for what we continuously have today. In other words, something long-lasting always has a “Story” to share. I shared the importance of the needle on @UpcycleStitches . A story tells why I use our needles….

My friend was right. It is too late to spread a whole picture of “Boro (& Sashiko)”. Her advice was based on her experience in both Japanese & Western fabric industry & her network. I was more idealistic, and she knew the reality better. Her observation was quite accurate. However……
