When we place the needle back into the pin cushion after completing the prepared patterns, we honor our hard work. Some may misunderstand that the moment of “completion of stitching” defines Sashiko. In truth, it’s just the beginning. To truly make it Sashiko-like, we must go through several steps—one of which is called “Mizutoushi.”

If Sashiko were only about enjoying the result of stitching, any thread or tool could be used. However, when it comes to appreciating the wisdom of Sashiko, using the proper tools and supplies is essential. There are reasons and stories behind why we use a very specific thread for Sashiko.
☆
The process of drying the fabric feels like watching my child board a school bus, ready to start their own journey—with a bit of help from us, I hope. You spend significant time with your Sashiko. Choose the best way to care for both your Sashiko and yourself. The Sashiko thread we use is not only for creating a beautiful stitch but for beginning its journey as part of the fabric.
