Sashiko exist(ed) in the Japanese ordinary. Therefore, there isn’t such a thing as “Right and Wrong” – no rules, just preference. Please don’t worry about the slow & uneven stitches. Everyone is a beginner at first. Please do not be scared of “Cultural Appropriation” too much. When you care for Sashiko with decent imagination (that Sashiko is a foreign word for you), the respect would exist within yourself naturally. I don’t know about others, but I would not ask you to be “skillful” to call your stitching Sashiko. The result of how it looks is important, but secondary. A process of appreciating the fabric and the moment – willingness to learn the custom is what makes Sashiko unique. Please do not be afraid, and please do not ignore the fact, even if it is inconvenient to you.

When people hear “No rules”, some twist the word to “whatever is fine”. “No rules” is not equal to “whatever”. “No rules” means that YOU get to find your own answer (preference) by learning it continuously. Continuous learning is the sign of respect.

Sashiko is not a form of Slow-stitching. It is slower stitching in comparison to machine stitch. However, many Japanese tried to improve. Please try to improve your stitching as well. Please keep practicing and enjoying it. Please do not use the word “Art/Creativity” as an excuse to not to learn more. Please doubt the loud voice. I share so that we can learn. I offer the “short-cut (class)” for you to start Sashiko from the point where I stand now. Ultimately, there is no such a thing as “Sashiko should be ◯◯” – the only fact is that the Sashiko is a Japanese term with many stories based on Japanese culture. Do not be afraid. Try to enjoy it. Before spreading what Sashiko is, please learn the whole picture. In today’s society, the only way to pass down the Sashiko I had received is asking you to be caring & mindful. There are reasons that I decided to speak up. Please do not ignore the silent voices.
