atsushijp, 2020年11月13日

I occasionally wonder… “Don’t you feel sad when someone summarizes your culture in one sentence?” What if the “someone” is from outside of your culture? What if the culture is strongly rooted in your whole life?

☆

I am very happy to see Sashiko getting so popular. A quick answer is very tempting to enjoy it. I am not denying the quick teaching of how to. What I am asking is to just keep learning. The speed/efficiency/ isn’t going to transmit everything in our life. “Boro is a mending technique” is one of the statements that make me sad. Yes, “Boro” has a lot of mending on it. Yes, Boro is beautiful. Yes, someone probably is teaching so. However, there are also many stories on the piece of Boro.

☆

This Jacket is “To-Be-Boro”. Keiko is working on it. The 1st photo – Mainly white side is “showing-side (Outside)”. The 2nd photo, more colorful & patched one, is the “hiding-side (inside)”. I understand you like the “inside” to be “outside” because of how it looks. However, there are stories why we would do this. Without the stories, just “wonderful technique” will wipe away the cultural aspect of “something important” to us.

I often make “Anpan” – red bean paste buns. My daughter asked me why they are always round… So, in 2023, I bake the square bread, which I feel quite strange to Put Red Beans Paste in – so just homemade just square white bread. Sashiko is my profession, but…

My goal is to share the “voice” of those who actually practice Japanese Sashiko stitching. A daily comment here is a great way to do so, but I will add one more action, “Sashiko Talk”, where I invite Sashiko stitchers to discuss what Sashiko is for them. I hope you…

In most “making/crafting” fields, among people so called “craftsmen/teachers/artists”, we can find a big difference in what they are looking at. I often see people in 4 categories: Here, in Sashiko, (1) The one who likes Sashiko stitching itself (as a process). (2) The one who likes what Sashiko can…
