One may say, “It’s just a word. (Don’t over-react)”. Well, the word carries a lot of “images”. In order to protect who I am as a Japanese, it is critical to explain what “the word” conveys within. A word can be more than just the word by knowing the culture. If they are not familiar with the culture, then the usage of the word should be “respected” (not restricted).

This photo is “strange (wrong)” in many aspects. To be honest, I do not want you to like it. If you like this photo, you have a lot to learn about the Japanese word/culture. Not knowing is perfectly fine. Don’t worry. I am here to share. However, when one pushes their value that this photo is “beautiful” without knowing the culture, then it is a problem. (The photos are taken by us, with our own Boro-to-be piece. I didn’t want to take this photo, but for sharing how strange it can be).

言葉はとても大切です。その文化にて生活していない人が、”言葉遊びだから良いじゃない”という無責任な考え方で流せる程、単純なものではありません。この写真を撮ること、ずっと躊躇ってました。でも、今だからこそ、この写真を撮らなければいけないと思いました。

「襤褸の上でご飯を食べる」。この言葉とこの写真を見て、「素敵だなぁ」と思う人は日本人には少ないのではないかと思います。この襤褸作品は何回も洗濯され、綺麗で匂いもない現代に作られた物です。それでも、食欲がわかない。”青いご飯”みたいなもんです。究極の違和感。僕からすると嫌悪感。

襤褸を知らないまま、襤褸を日常に取り入れることには、「怖さ」があります。襤褸は素敵なんです。ファッションの一部としての襤褸には凄い可能性があると思います。違和感がわからないのは良いんです。育った環境が違うから。学べばいい。ただ、言葉遊びをするのだとして「襤褸の上でご飯を食べるのはお洒落だ」という価値観の押し付けをされるのは嫌なんです。襤褸の上で食事なんて正気の沙汰じゃない。

There are some things easily lost when translating from one language to another, one culture to another. The nuance, essence, and gravitas are greatly diminished, creating space for clumsy, inaccurate interpretations. Thank you for striving to facilitate a better understanding. You encourage a respectful, inquisitive learning environment and resist the empty consumption of something very meaningful.
I really like the way you bring important aspects to talk about boro and sashiko. There’s much more within an stitch and another, and cultural heritage, and cultural appropriation. I keep coming back to your posts because of these thoughts. Thank you 🙏🏼

お写真に戸惑いが溢れていてとても切なくなりますが、これをオシャレだと感じる方もおられるのでしょうね。
境界線が見えるか見えないかではなく、それが存在するのだということへの戸惑いでしょうか。
