In my Sashiko workshop, I don’t spend much time in explaining how to “make” Sash

atsushijp, 2019年12月18日

In my Sashiko workshop, I don’t spend much time in explaining how to “make” Sashiko items. I do not focus on the result. What do they learn in my workshop, then? I teach the basics of the Sashiko we practice – how to hold the needle, a good posture, and the rhythm in stitching. In an analogy with cooking, it is like them learning how to use the knife and the posture of cutting a vegetable instead of googling a “life-hack”. ☆
There is nothing wrong with using a life-hack & learning recipe (= how to make a Sashiko coaster & such). I can probably offer a series of Sashiko workshops with “how to” starting from how to prepare the pattern on the fabric to how to complete the Sashiko jacket. However, at this moment, I focus on teaching the basic & core. After learning the basics, the graduate can be (& already became) a great Sashiko creator without my step by step instruction – I teach the basics, but the result is up to them. No rules to follow. No regulations to be judged on. Only wisdom to make them a “Sashiko stitcher” that I would like to pass down. ☆

I talk about the importance of the Japanese Language in order to understand what Sashiko fully is. However, it doesn’t mean that every Japanese (anyone with fluent Japanese language skill) is well educated to define what Sashiko is. Some are using the word “Sashiko” to market themselves regardless of their…

I realize the pain from Cultural Appropriation in Sashiko (I learned it is okay to say it hurts). However, I am NOT asking you to stop calling your stitching “Sashiko”. It is the opposite. I want you to call it “Sashiko” while trying to understand what Sashiko really is. It…

Another mind food for us. I occasionally share my honesty with anger. However, I rarely describe my feelings as “◯◯ made me angry”. I am aware of my feelings. In fact, I “choose” to be angry when something crosses the line (boundary). ☆ I used to be a Sashiko “business…
