As you may have learned, a big picture of Sashiko history is already lost. The Sashiko we practice today is more like a “revived version” of Sashiko stitching thanks to my grandparents generation (like around 80 years old now). They are the last generation of Japanese who actually received the primitive image of Sashiko from their grandparents generation. So, I believe, the last generation of “Sashiko” is about 5~6 generations ago. On top of that, Sashiko was too ordinary for them to record it, too casual to document it, and what we can see now is the jog downed note regarding about the patterns and such. I do not know any “official documents” regarding of Sashiko in so many generations ago.

This is one of the big reasons I say, “There is no such thing as Right or Wrong in Sashiko.” It existed in many regions in Japan, and each place had its uniqueness. The purpose, motivation, and the outcome alter over time. However, the process of “caring others & appreciation to the moment” didn’t change. Therefore, I keep mentioning Sashiko is more than the stitches. I am not here to judge others. I am here to pass down as much wisdom as possible, along with Sashiko pieces with (hopefully) synchronising our thoughts to the Japanese in 300 years ago, so our next generation can learn from what we leave behind. I hope my writing aren’t arrogant or intimidating: however, if you take it that way, please let me know. I am here to learn as well. ☆
刺し子を学ぶ際に、家業としての刺し子は勿論のこと、諸先生方の本を主に参考にするようにしています。その中で、敬愛する吉田英子先生も、「刺し子を現代に」という立ち位置でお話されていると理解しています。つまりは、「刺し子の原型」とも言える文化を、現代において直接誰かからお話として伺うことは、ほぼ不可能に近いのではないかと思うのです。作品から読み取るしかないのですが、同時に「想像力」を働かせて、できるだけ思いを重ねることが大事なのかな……と。「心配り」なんだと思うんです。過去と未来に心を配る。そんな刺し子を伝えていきたいな……と。ちなみに、おそらくですが、「刺し子の原型と呼べる文化」は、「刺し子」と名前が付いていないんじゃないかとすら思っています。刺し子は、所謂「総称」のような気もしていて。飛騨では「つんづり」と呼ばれていたようです。きっと冬が厳しい山国や僻地には、類似した文化が存在していたはずです。いつか……日本中を旅して調べてみたいものです（学術的な文献をご存知の方があれば、是非ご連絡下さい。今は本当に刺し子を知りたいと思っているので。）
