Stitches reflect who the stitcher is. Unshin – the rhythm reflects one’s status

atsushijp, 2022年6月23日

Stitches reflect who the stitcher is. Unshin – the rhythm reflects one’s status (including emotion), and the accumulation will illustrate who the stitcher is. This is one answer to a big question: “what is the [best size] for Sashiko stitches”. My workshop is an opportunity for “me” to adjust this teaching for “you” – since we all have different skill sets, experience & mindset. The workshop in CA on 7/25 is still available. Hope to meet you there.

☆

I started Live Streaming in 2017. Back then, I found no videos about Sashiko’s Unshin with the style I practice. I thought no one was interested. It was too ordinary, like the skill of cutting Onion neatly with a knife & cutting board. Then, I learned that “The way of using a Knife & Cutting Board” is THE content some wanted to learn in Sashiko, both Japanese & non-Japanese. That’s how I started my Sashiko Workshop in both languages. In 2022, I see quite many videos showing “Unshin” with tagging which is pretty similar (or identical) to what I do. It is an expected outcome of me sharing “unedited” stitching in front of Camera, without hiding anything, on Youtube Live periodically. My goal is to share it. So this is a good outcome. However, it is important to preserve the “roots” as well. When you learn Sashiko from someone who teaches the similar Unshin (how to use thimble in Sashiko & such), please check whom(where) they learned from. If it is me or my videos, enjoy their workshop. If they mention someone else, I would like to be a friend of their teacher, another Sashiko artisan in Japan whom I don’t know (Someone Japanese who has been practicing Sashiko for more than 10 years. Some Japanese copy what I do, too). If they say they taught themselves, then ask which materials they watched… this clarification help us to identify the “root” and protect Sashiko as Culture.
☆
Since Sashiko exists in “Ordinary”, it is not well structured. Therefore, it is extremely important to protect “unknown” Roots. One popularity today shouldn’t repaint the wisdom of a few hundreds years. I am here to share & protect that.

I would like to remind – Sashiko is(was) an ordinary practice developed in the ordinary. Therefore, the extraordinary is(was) not common in Sashiko. We define “extraordinary” differently – some may think Sashko itself (as the result of days of hand-stitching) is already the extraordinary (unbelievable) practice. ☆ What I mean…

I love the way you gently but firmly establish the importance of acknowledgment and reference to your roots. Traceability and authenticity is so important and I love it’s so transparent here!
