I say there is no “Right and Wrong” in Sashiko. It means that there are no particular rules to follow. However, it doesn’t mean “whatever” is fine. I want YOU to make your own rules to follow. We would teach how to find your own rules instead of providing a superficial freedom first. “Stitch as you feel” is true for enjoying Sashiko. However, teaching free-style should be after teachers get used to the standard. It is important to learn the “Form/Standard” to fully experience the practice. Anyone can play any musical instrument for their fun. It is really up to a player – play as you feel is very true. However, when one teaches (or even insists) that they play a specific genre, here let’s say Jazz, “whatever” can destroy the culture. Free Jazz sometimes sounds like a collection of noise. However, a “Free Jazz” piece by someone who does not know how to play standard Jazz would be recognized as “Free Jazz”. This will never happen in Jazz because many people understand the difference. Unfortunately, in Sashiko, this “may” be happening. No Rules. No Right or Wrong. Free Jazz is “Free” in theory. However, there is a “decent standard” to respect. Similar concepts can be applied to many other culture, Music, Art. Cooking, Carpentry, & more. Sashiko is one of these. The difference is that there are not many Japanese who can speak up like I do in English.
☆
I believe I teach one form of “Standard” – we call it Kata (Form). “Kata” enables us to practice Sashiko on the same stage, not only as a talented/gifted artisan, but ordinary people like us to enjoy Sashiko. Come to Live Streaming on Thursday night if you have a say. (Come & hang out even if you don’t have a say). In-Person Workshop is still available @worldshiborinetwork

I was very fortuned to come across with this vintage Book about Kimono. It is one of my big journey to learn how the Japanese enjoy “cloth” which differ us from wild animal. Interesting. 知人に、こんな素晴らしい本を譲って頂きました。 着物についての本。いつの出版かもわからないけれど、サインあり。じっくり拝読しとります。 2017-11-18 04:04:12 Source

In recent posts, I have been sharing the significance of the Japanese Ordinary – in which we tend to forget about in Westernization, but we all had it before when we “had to” stitch. I say it “Japanese Ordinary” because I can only talk on behalf of Japanese culture. However,…

A good (psychological) counselor doesn’t give a client his/her opinion. He/She listens to the client, and navigates them to ease an issue. The counselor is not a magician – they cannot ease everything. However, I sincerely respect the good counselors for their massive contribution to humanity. ☆ The “healer” often…

Many say that rules are made to be broken. I think you agree that in life generally we should learn the “rules” or the basics, in order to understand and decide on our own. One needs experience to express themselves.
