In a single word “Sashiko”, we can find many styles. It often differs based on the region, and they have their own traditionals – stories about Sashiko. Stories aren’t only for traditions. The sense of aiming to be “efficient” can simplify the fact, and let us see only what we want to see. Even in this trend, we can find many ramifications in the single word “Sashiko”.
☆
1-Sashiko as Art (Decoration Purpose). 2-Sashiko as “No Waste” (Mending Purpose). These 2 purposes are a very important part of Sashiko, but it isn’t one of the origins of Sashiko. When we care to listen to the stories, the purpose (why do we do Sashiko) becomes more clear. When the stories articurate our practice & culture, some of today’s Sashiko phrases sound strange. In fact, for me, I feel they are missing the most delicious part of the practice. Stitching for the beautiful design like embroidery. Mending & Patch-working to make “Boro-Like” fabric. There is nothing wrong with them, and I enjoy that, too. However, I believe these 2 will not complete the Sashiko as “a whole”. If you find our Sashiko pieces somewhat different from others who teach, please think about what the difference is. The photos we share here are (almost) all made in today’s world – not a piece done a few hundreds years ago. Sashiko is NOT in history yet. It is still ON the history with many stories, including mine, and hopefully, including yours to make the future of Sashiko. We/You can make “authentic” Sashiko/Boro – just one point that (1) and (2) aren’t enough to make it happen.

Sashiko is NOT the word for “Mending Technique”. “Mending” is an important aspect of Sashiko as practice, but not the word for it. The simplified explanation about Sashiko in English is greatly misleading toward something different from Sashiko developed in Japan. ☆ When we have a headache, we take a…

With sound on – 音が出ます。 The video is just Atsushi cutting (slicing) a bunch of green onions, and this is a gift for anyone who wants to learn Sashiko technique. When you slice the green onion, do you measure how thin you would (did) slice? Do you use a marker?…

It was such a great workshop in beautiful Quilt Store @gothamquilts organized by @empirequilters. Boro Jacket & Sashiko Jacket. They learned the core skill to apply to make “their own” Sashiko piece. Thank you! タイムズスクエアから歩いて10分未満というような所で、ワークショップをする機会を頂けました。大変でしたが、まー、楽しかった。あっという間の6時間! 2018-01-13 01:06:15 Source
