Stitching Technique, Design, Skilled Stitches, Accuracy, Patterns… they are all

atsushijp, 2022年7月20日

Stitching Technique, Design, Skilled Stitches, Accuracy, Patterns… they are all important in Sashiko, but they do not illustrate the whole picture of Sashiko. Can you think of one common item in the concepts I introduced in the beginning of this Reel? It is all about “Result” or “Outcome” of stitching. Again, it is very important to focus on the result – outcome of what we make. However, it is hugely biased by the Western Culture, and it leaves the Japanese mindset in Sashiko behind. What I teach in my workshop is the importance of “process” – and “Rhythm”, and “Form” to make it happen. Sashiko is very simple. Once they practice for a while, anyone can make beautiful Sashiko pieces. The point will become how “often” and how “long” can they make the same results. Once they focus on the practice, the outcome will be secondary, yet powerful & beautiful to others. This may be the reason why our Sashiko pieces can inspire many people – the beauty outside of the common sense in Western Value (I believe the beauty of Sashiko is quite common in Japan – in many different ways, but the core value remain the similarity).

☆

I will be traveling to CA soon. Sashiko Workshop teaching the “Form” & “Rhythm” above are on 7/23 and 7/25 (one-day workshop – same contents). We have 7/24 for the Public event presented by @worldshiborinetwork . I will have our Sashiko items for showing & some are for sale. I hope to meet/see you there!

When I share my “idealism”, some advise me I shouldn’t keep it so high saying “It is how it works in this society”. I understand it. “Freedom” is the most important factor in this society, and asking for respect can be too much of a demand. Everyone is different. We…
