I would like to share another word, which may(will) be over-simplified (like Sashiko/Boro) soon or later. The word is “Unshin (運針)”. Since it is one of the most important core of what I am sharing, I wanted to share the word before someone foreign defines it. I uploaded a full video of this post.
☆
Unshin means the “movement of a needle”, and therefore there is no such a thing as “Right and Wrong”. There are recommended forms and traditions in each region/tradition. However, defining Unshin with “universal rule” may twist the original. There is a different Unshin for Sashiko even in my own tradition. The Unshin I teach is modified(improved) so “everyone” can learn regardless of their hand/finger size. The most famous Unshin will be from the tradition of “Wasai (和裁)”, the Japanese cloth making/tailoring. I am wishful for getting better at Unshin of Wasai, it is quite different – different needles, thimble, and movement. In the video, I compare 2 Unshin – running stitches of Sashiko & Wasai – in Japanese culture.
☆
Again, none of these Unshin is the “universal” answer. There are many artisans who stitch better than me in many other forms. So, please do not define Unshin without knowing what it is. Just one disclaimer… I am nowhere close to “good at” Unshin of Wasai (left side). I practiced some, but please be advised that the “Authentic Wasai” is much better than what I am doing here. Sashiko? Well… I am happy with what I do.

Thank you for taking the time to explain that. 🙏
Seen a documentary by Monty Don about Japanese gardens lately that reminded me of the discussions about right/wrong and cultural appropriation on this account. Both beautiful and interesting, helping me to understand the struggle to understand and teach!
