ThanksGiving is coming in the US. Before I learned about ThanksGiving in history

atsushijp, 2020年11月25日

ThanksGiving is coming in the US. Before I learned about ThanksGiving in history, it was just a week of huge sales. After learning what ThanksGiving is (was), it became a day to think what “Thank” is for us – from many perspectives.

☆

It is my belief – without imagining the (possible) pain, no true appreciation can deliver . It is almost impossible to “understand” someone’s pain, but we can all imagine. We all should imagine. The pain can be only validated by the people with pain. “Oh, you shouldn’t feel pain” is already lacking the imagination. I ask to respect Japanese culture in Sashiko  in public – a demand comes with responsibility. So, I feel responsible to explain “what is my pain” especially for those who forgot to imagine.

☆

I am happy many people enjoy Sashiko today. I want to be friends with Sashiko artists, artisans, practitioners, and teachers – anyone who enjoys Sashiko. After all, my goal is to pass down the Sashiko. If my goal is to be famous in Sashiko or to make quick money, I wouldn’t be this difficult & wouldn’t write just stories everyday for more than a year. So, then what is the pain? My pain occurs when someone minimizes the feelings (lack of imagination). Sashiko cannot be taught in a day, in a month, or in years. My (Online) Class is not the end of learning – I provide the very beginning of learning. When some think they already know about Sashiko enough & “fun/creativity” should come before the culture – I feel the pain – through the oppression of minimizing the voices. (Longer version will be published in Patreon).

We are a group of Sashiko stitchers – and Sashiko usually indicates a form of Japanese hand stitching. So, yes, it is hand-stitched. The previous posts (on 11/3 & 11/5) are the photos of the denim curtain with me hand-stitching in 5 months probably a few hours every week. Most…

Mingei… I am impressed by a translation of Mingei as “Art Without Heroes” by @roisininglesby. It will bridge the Japanese Philosophy standing behind their handicraft to the Western Value of Art. Mingei is indeed the Art without “Specific” Heroes. ☆ However, “Art Without Heroes” doesn’t mean that there were no…

This is my 5th year of teaching Sashiko. Life is interesting. I am realizing what I had considered as “Mediocre (in today’s society)” is actually what the others are interested in learning. ☆ I have not met anyone who teaches Sashiko in the same way as I stitch/teach in me…
