Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

It is true that people used Sashiko to mend garment/fabric. So, mending itself is an important part of Sashiko. However, I do not often have a mending project myself. In this society, the opportunity of “mending” does not happen so much. Cutting a piece off from a pair of pants, and then putting the patch with hand-stitching may look like Sashiko (and be defined as Sashiko), but I would say, it is not following the spirit of Sashiko – to appreciate the fabric.

☆

I usually do not have this “big hole” to mend as the photo shows. I would usually mend it way before the hole becomes this big. This hole was made by accident (that I introduced in the Live Streaming). It was my mistake, and I feel sorry for the fabric – but the only way to recover my mistake is to fix and reuse it again. This is a rare mending Sashiko project with this big hole, and I decided to broadcast most of the procedure without any editing on Live Streaming. I don’t know if I would like the result, but I am definitely enjoying the process of “SUPER thick” layers of fabric.

While sharing our Sashiko Story, I realized that “culture” may be defined as a means of standard deviation for the people who live “there”. When we live in the same culture, we sometimes understand each other without extra explanation. It is because we have our stories within – in mutual…
