Ah. Another “cultural” misunderstanding. ☆

When I shared the Sashiko mask saying, “The fabric mask is better than nothing (no wearing mask)”, I received quite a lot of comments saying “Fabric Mask is (completely) useless”. I was shocked, but I am not a medical professional. I researched, and I came to the conclusion on 3/22: The handmade fabric mask is good when we know how to use (clean) it. ☆

Now, reading the announcement from CDC and other institutions, I think I understand what has happened – the primary purpose of the fabric mask that I wanted to share is Not “to protect myself” – it is to protect others from me. Many Japanese friends in Japan wear the mask for the purpose of “not-to-give the virus”. I know that the fabric mask is useless in comparison to the N95. However, in our understanding, the mask is a sign of caring, not the sign of freaking out. ☆

I believe that any fabric DIY mask is good for preventing the spread of droplets from our mouth. When you make it for medical purposes, do research. If your purpose is the same as mine, why don’t you enjoy the time to express yourself. Is Fashion in the Crisis inappropriate? If so, how about Boro? Boro is the beauty in extreme situations. I am not a professional in fashion/Art, but “Art” exists in Crisis, right? The sense of beauty – the choice of cloth (mask) defines the human. It may be too much to make a dress from scratch to define what your fashion is – but it is quite simple to make a mask to express who you are. Enjoy Sashiko & Enjoy Stitching. ☆ – – – ☆

Mending a pair of jeans occasionally require another mending. I realize that the Japanese vintage fabric I patched was torn… well, let’s do another mending. 布の補修をするとは、つまりは布の補修を繰り返す日々に突入することになります。それが楽しいんですけどね。 2017-04-05 20:39:11 Source

What is Sashiko?

2017年11月18日

“What is Sashiko?” I answer that “Sashiko is a process of appreciating the fabric, and adding our care into it. ” Boro is an ultimate result of Sashiko. We made it like a placemat and table runner. Totally one of a kind. 2017-11-18 17:37:47 Source

There is definitely benefit, is it perfect, no, but it is better to make and leave the highest quality for those treating patients. As for fashion/art we absolutely need pieces of beauty, joy, humor, and relaxation at this time. Those are the moments that save us from the emotional toll, the pain and sorrow. And my limited understanding of boro is that using, regenerating, keeping an item functional seems like a perfect basis for a mask. If I have that wrong, my apologies for not fully knowing the practice.

Please understand that if your mask is only 10% effective (and this is likely) then 90% of viruses get through the mask. It is little different from not wearing a mask. If you want to make something pretty, that is fine, only do not make a desire to help in some way and do something and make it art allow you to also think that it helps with virus transmission, because it will not. I am very surprised that so many people want to cling to this idea that it can help. Scientifically it cannot make a significant difference. It may even hurt because more people may go out thinking they are ok because they made a mask. Please note the N95 is only useful if it is fit-tested to an individual’s face. It has to be fit-tested so that the mask seals to that person’s face and no air leaks in or out. So a homemade mask that could at best be 10% effective has its effectiveness reduced because it does not have a sealed fit against the face.

In South Africa we have a serious shortage of medical masks and they actually encourage the people to wear fabric masks, our instructions arw, it must be 3 layer preferably 100%cotton on the outer layer, have to be washed after every wear, and not worn longer than 30min at a time, ideally each person should have at least 2 masks. I have made and sold almost 200, it is very very hard work, I’ll rather do embroidery, at least my order is almost finish, guess who is buying embroidery fabric and thread after lockdown 😉
