Thank you for many comments on the “Sashiko fabric mask” post. It is my intention to share the beauty of “process of making (caring)”, not only the result of fabric mask as an “Art” or “Fashion”. ☆

Again, I received many “advice” on the previous post. It is getting kind of funny rather than shocking at this point. Did a fabric mask itself insult them in the past…? We all here understand that fabric mask is NOT the replacement of N95. If we can get N95, use N95. However, it is a crisis that a hospital don’t have enough N95. If we are healthy and have a privilege to stay home, then let others have N95. When we really need to go out for a short period of time, like grocery shopping, then wear something you can protect others from yourself. It is similar to the politeness we tell our child: “cough into your sleeve”. The sleeve is your mask. ☆

I am NOT advocating the effectiveness of the fabric mask. I know it is not as good as a mask. It is one of the reasons I do not list a mask on the web store (Thank you for your inquiry) – some may misunderstand the mask in the crisis, and I do not have time to follow up the customer on how to properly use it. (I respect those who are selling the mask with good follow-up. I wish I could do that). Instead, I am trying to share the enjoyment of “making” the mask, with/without Sashiko. The Sashiko mask is beautiful as a Result. However, what I would like to communicate is “Process” on top of the Result. It goes the same to viruses. When I care for others, N95 for medical professionals and Fabric masks for me, I accept if I get the virus. We act responsibly for our best, getting sick is no one’s fault. I do my best in the process, and I accept the result (hopefully staying healthy). Try Sashiko. It helps you to calm down. The Sashiko Fabric mask itself may not help us much from the virus (better than nothing), but making a Sashiko mask will help us from getting sick from “something”. ☆

As I accumulate days & years, I learn the importance of understanding (or even accepting) one’s role. Am I a dancer on the stage? Or a Bassist in the Orchestra? Am I on the side of “Playing”, “Preparing” or “Watching”? This role – where they stand – changes based on…

I love NYC. I respect the people here. For me, it seems they acquire who they are. With mixing so many diversities in one city, one has to be clear about who they is. Japanese culture was developed in a completely different setting. While NYC is a unique Salad bowl,…

In the last 200 years, “Sashiko” has been developing its form by those who stitch Sashiko. Also today, Sashiko changes. I do not resist the change. I just hope that the change will be done by someone who is sincere to the culture, who cares about the upstream. ☆ Although…

    どんな状況でも針と糸さえあれば喜びや美を毎日感じるものを生み出せ、魔除けの意味も込められる。本当に素晴らしいことですね🙏

I think its important to note that we are collectively going through a mass trauma. And not everyone responds to trauma in the same way. North America has a very me focused society and therefore don’t all see masks as a form of social caring or responsibility. The top doctor in canada has now stated to wear masks to prevent spread. Because any percentage of stopping spread is important, no matter how small. Thank you for sharing your beautiful mask and a peek into Japanese culture. ❤️

I see your posts as an inspiration to try Sashiko and not to be discouraged if it isn’t perfect. I also appreciate the beauty of this process and the final project. Thank you for posting and I mean no disrespect to your or the process when I state how beautiful it is.

The sleeve is your mask is the best explanation of this equivalence that I have heard.

The whole mask issue is just as bizarre as the toilet paper thing. On our town’s Facebook page people argue about masks all day long. It seems it’s something they understand and can control, whereas the virus they cannot. I’m happy to wear my masks, happy to share my masks, happy to sit and hand-stitch to relax ~ and don’t care who does or doesn’t like it 🤣

🙌 Keep sharing the beauty, function and value to others due to each of us doing our share to prevent the spread of this deadly disease. Now, CDC recommends to cover your face with something other than an N 95
