Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

Remember. Fabric carries memories. We may put in our thoughts into fabric by hand Sashiko.

I am in sorrow. My friend may be right. It is probably too late to advocate what Sashiko is. The word “Sashiko” has its own meaning, especially in the marketing and populism. Do I give up? No, I won’t. However, it is okay to be sad, right?
☆
My mother, Keiko, is quite an optimistic person. She cheers me up with saying, “I am nowhere to define Sashiko, nowhere to change anything. However, I can keep creating Sashiko. Let’s share the Sashiko everyone in the world would like to have in their life – a piece they would like to use.” She stitches and pray. I stitch and talk. We involve as many friends as possible. This is Sashi_Co, and you can see who we are throughout what we make. ☆

Almost 5 years ago, when I received the first request to offer the Sashiko Workshop, I had no idea what I could teach. Ever since, “teaching” became the main focus of my challenges. As I always say, teaching comes with big responsibility – because students there need to somewhat trust…

We now enjoy the “antique” side of Boro – some pieces of Boro are nicely exhibited in museums, or sold in the big antique market as “Art”. This is a very interesting phenomena, and I agree with the beauty of Boro. However, I feel the need to share the Stories…

We are making items we can “offer” for sale with as reasonable pricing as possible. Our stories become more powerful when they “experience” it. There are reasons why they stitched Geometric Patterns on specific areas on the fabric. There are stories why “mending” isn’t the primary essence in Sashiko. After…

Chin up. Cultures evolve and so is sashiko. But everyone appreciates the beauty in it. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

Oh please please don’t give up… I feel joy in simply looking at your sashiko even though I don’t really stitch very much and I’m sure the same is true for many people.

A friend recommended your account recently as I am very interested in learning about Sashiko from an authentic source. Of course it is ok to be sad. I hope you have a good day today.

You are absolutely allowed to be sad, and angry, and hurting. And you might not have control over how the entire world uses the word sashiko and the pain of that is real and valid and you deserve to take the time process and heal that. As often and as long as it takes. But you do get to define what sashiko means to you and to all the people you have relationship with. Thank you so much.
