I finished writing on my insight of “Cultural Appropriation” in Sashiko. It is a long post on upcyclestitches.com – (Link Available from the Profile)- I appreciate your time to read it mindfully. In short, I will not be offended if they call their stitching Sashiko when they once care if it is cultural appropriation or not. Some may have changed their “name” after introducing some of the powerful writing about the Japanese Cultural Appropriation. Here I encourage you to call your stitching Sashiko since you come to this account and read what I write. I also explain why I concluded my insight like this. I want you to understand why I encourage.

The people who worry if they are offending the others are not the one who are actually hurting the others. One of the outcome of “Quick Information” would be “(Innocent) Ignorance” and I would like to change that by sharing the Sashiko we practice. The words come with responsibility, so I would like share the importance of being mindful when we express our insight. I appreciate those who gave me encouraging comments to keep this journey ongoing. It means a lot to me since I still encounter people with ignorance – that end up with tiring me. ☆
I hope this article will motivate you to keep enjoying Sashiko stitching. Don’t be scared. No one will attack you when you are attentive to what you do. No worries.

「着物」「侘び寂び」日本の単語は消費者の気持ちをグッと掴むことができて、着物や侘び寂びに全く関係ない商品に、その単語が使われることがあります。それを「文化の盗用（悪用、私物化）」として、話題になりました。刺し子にも当てはまるところがあって、印刷された柄を刺し子と称したり、刺し子織りを手刺しと表現したり、と例を上げれば暇がないのですが、それでも個人的には、「日本文化を大切にしてくれる人であれば、どんな手縫いも刺し子と呼んで欲しい」という気持ちがあるのです。刺し子には正解がないというのが根本にありますしね。これに関しては、またブログに書こうと思っています。なかなか説明が難しい。でも、商売の為だけに名前を使われるのは、やっぱり嫌ですねー。

ブログ読ませていただきました。刺し子への深い思いがこもったあつしさんの考え抜いたお言葉だと感じました。大切にしてくれるなら呼んで欲しいという暖かさは、よく分かります。C/Aかどうかは、着物と刺し子では違いもある、その微妙さを説明されたことに感心いたします。難しいところだと思います。言葉が一人歩きしていく懸念もあるでしょうから。
私自身侘び寂びを指摘したことによって、じゃあ「湯のみ」はダメなのかと言ってきた陶芸家も沢山いました。それに対して、侘び寂びの誤用と湯のみを湯のみって呼ぶのは、違う度合いなんだと説明した際に、感じたのは、やはりその違いがわからないで商品化しているなら、結局敬意と学びたい努力が欠けてるのではないかと言う点でした。ただ全てが白黒はっきり出来るわけでは無いし、誰が良いか悪いか決めるわけでもなく、結局商品化して利益を得る側の責任の無さに感じます。
お家で刺し子を勉強されている方々には、より一層あつしさんの切実な思いが届いて行動に移していただけるといいですね。

I’ve read your article on upcyclestitches and I really appreciate all your explanations. It’s not often we hear things from this perspective and it gives me special respect and more of an understanding of the essence of sashiko. I lived in Tokyo for one year back in 2006-07 and I was in awe of the beauty of handmade items. There seemed to be so much deep meaning in the unique creations. I didn’t really do any stitching whilst I was there but have recently tried some sashiko. I hope I can call it Sashiko as I’m a little confused and would not like to offend anyone… Thank you again for bringing more understanding of this craft and I look forward to learning more through your posts and information.
