Another question I often receive is “How can you make your stitches so even?”. The answer is quite simple → “They are even because I do not try to make them even”. As long as one tries to be “perfect” or “precise” in stitching, it isn’t easy to have even stitches. A human cannot continue concentration for that long time. ☆
If you have taken my workshops/classes, you understand what I am talking about. I almost never tell to make stitches even. Instead, I repeat the word “rhythm”. It may (often) require my personal attention to get the appropriate “rhythm” in stitching. One can watch the tutorials on my Youtube channel, but our Online Sashiko Class with specific video & the personal attention on “Live Session” will complete the understanding of “rhythm”. Of course, your investment supports me in many aspects. ☆
The Online Class requires at least 3~4 hours to complete, possibly more than 10, or more hours. In this shutdown, I decided to offer the special store credit on the Online Class so a participant can receive up to 40% Discount in the retail value. The longer the shutdown continues, the more I feel that the Sashiko (or similar activity) is “essential” for us. It is not a time to judge the result. It is a time to appreciate the process, and moment, and care for others & oneself. The Sashiko with rhythm enable that to the maximum, I believe. The details can be found either on our profile, or in @upcyclestitches // Thank you for your caring. ☆

Forever in-progress Sashiko Denim. Interestingly, both Keiko and me, cannot focus on only one Sashiko projects. We would need several, sometimes more than 5 or so, projects to keep our brains fresh. This denim still have uncompleted part to be Asanoha pattern, yet I believe it is okay to not…

A series of Sashiko stitching makes one Boro piece. Interestingly, we find it very artistic after more than a few hundred years. I wonder what they were thinking when they made stitching. We only can imagine, but trying so resonate how we feel over years of time is kind of…

I see this mirrored in my own work: In the past I’ve had to score hundreds of baguettes on the daily, each getting five scores. They will come out uneven and ugly when you think too much about each cut, but when you develop your natural rhythm, each one comes out close to perfection.
