A good friend of ours sent us this photo. She visited a small exhibition room in a small village in Japan, where people practiced ordinary Sashiko. This is another example of the “silent voice”. Not many Japanese know this place. We didn’t even know until fairly recently. However, their Sashiko certainly existed, and they had to “dig out” the Boro once their seniors buried them under the ground (I have an article “Boro from ground”).

2020 has been a very difficult year. I want everyone to find out how “healing” Sashiko can be. When we mend the fabric, we also mend our feelings/mind. I teach our Sashiko to not to focus on the “result” – more like how to enjoy the “moment” rather than the “better result”. Sashiko can be meditative and curing. I understand we now need peace/love more than ever. That’s why, I keep sharing the stories and unedited scenery of stitching – not only “how to make it better” but also “what it is”.

I really do understand that we need “healing/remedy” now. I need one as well. However, if the “healing” is on someone’s pain(sacrifice), I want to (take) care (of) them before focusing on my healing. I hope you feel the same, too. Asking for only healing with shouting “heal me” will not result in true healing. True healing can be established on (mutual) caring – not selfishness. Therefore, I want “you” to know about what we do. You are the one who choose our future & how we live – which can be healing for all of us including earth and everything on the earth. The more you know, the more you can heal yourself, as well as others. Look at this “Boro”. It is way beyond “patchwork”, yet we can feel the caring/pain, and the healing they looked after each other.

英語圏で「襤褸はパッチワークでしょ」と言われると、う～んと頭を抱えてしまう理由として、たぶん本来の襤褸は姿形が残らない程、補修され使われてきたと思っているからだと思います。襤褸への道はパッチワークから始まりますが、イコールではないんです。大豆は味噌になりますが、大豆をお湯に溶いても味噌汁にはならない。過程が必要です。

究極の過程の一つに岐阜の山奥の知られていない刺し子の存在があります。襤褸……なのか？という疑問に答えられない程の刺し子です。現代ですら交通の便が悪い場所に存在する刺し子です。いつか、恵子さんと皆さんと一緒に伺いたいなと思っている場所の一つです。（恵子さんのお友達から頂いた写真です。ありがとうございます！）
