We are operating our “business” by mainly 2 people: Atsushi & her mother Keiko, with great help from many friends & supporters. We aren’t a big company with good cash-flow. We prioritize our mission over finalizing it, and therefore we usually do not take the investment offer. We would like to do what we feel we should. As much as we enjoy our choice, there are several drawbacks such as a difficulty in scale, meeting the market demands & supply, and having our own space to offer better service. In short, we don’t have a studio for our work. Sashiko & Dyeing threads do not require a big space to complete our job. A regular sized kitchen would be good enough to dye the threads for my mother’s Sashiko projects. One day, it is my (Atsushi’s) dream to make a studio for her to work on her passions – stitching and dyeing.
☆
Well, our threads may be so attractive because we do not make our production big. Keiko dyes all the Natural Dyes Sashiko Thread by hand – often even without gloves. The Japanese believe(d) in animism. The Japanese who (had to) practice Sashiko would have believed in the power of “spirit” more than we do now. We share stories for the message: “Sashiko is more than just a stitching” (in @SashikoStory). I hope the limitation in our production is representing the core essence of Sashiko even in the threads we offer.
