atsushijp, 2024年6月28日

A Teaching Opportunity is coming this weekend. From the preparation, I get quite nervous. Before/During the workshop, needless to say, my nervousness would skyrocket. Many encourage me by saying “Don’t Worry, You will be fine”, and “You have been doing this for years, right?”. Yes, this is my 6th year of teaching Sashiko, and I know what I will be teaching. I believe I will be fine. However, I would never be able to take it easy as it is “One Opportunity” for me where I get to deliver the message.
☆
It may be the ◯◯th Sashiko Workshop for me. A student may be one of many to me. However, to the student, in most cases, this is their First Time to learn Sashiko from me. I have numbers of “Returning Students”, but they are rare. So, it is always my last chance to deliver. It may sound exaggerated, but I feel I put my life on the line. This is the commitment I make to Teaching. I am teaching/sharing my life there – and it is my responsibility to make sure that the chance students gave me would be inspirational, meaningful, entertaining, and “understanding (Eye-Opening)”.
☆
Starting tomorrow, I am so excited to meet 12 new Sashiko Stitchers. I will do everything to deliver the message (including technique & mindset). Once the Workshop Starts, my mind will be always toward the “teaching”, until the moment of me saying “I hope you see now why I say Sashiko is more than stitching”. It is my mission to fill the gap that Sashiko introduced in English is missing.

I imagine, more than hundreds of years ago, in a small village in Japan, Japanese women got together and stitch. Were they so particular about their stitches? I don’t think so. They stitched for the purpose of “surviving”. They stitched alone sometimes and waited for the day got together. They…

When you are willing to pour more tea, first empty your cup. This is a very famous Zen-teaching. What I share may sound philosophical, but in reality, they are very practical. If you want to make the even stitches, do not try to stitch. Filling the “answers” requires a lot…

In the past, I once thought it had to be the “Japanese” or “well-experienced” in order to practice the “authentic” Sashiko. I was wrong. I had neglected what I could have done (which is “sharing”), and drew an unnecessary boundary. After almost 10 years, I am confident in saying that…

It’s such a good way of looking at the way of teaching. The one student, it’s their first time.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns about teaching. You are, as always, very responsible.
