I like doing things with my own hands. Cooking, Wood-Crafting (like simple furniture), fixing minor house issues, painting, and of course, stitching. In my youth, I tried so hard to be wealthy so that I have enough luxury to enjoy what I like. I was trying to “achieve” the happiness I define. In fact, I learned that happiness isn’t something to “accomplish”, or even “win over”: Happiness is something to realize. I spent a good 3 days repainting our bedroom this summer. Now, with proper lighting, I can take better photos like a piece in the museum? It isn’t the ideal way to present what Sashiko is, but we are proud of what we make, and one day I would like someone to have this piece as “Sashiko”.

I say “Sashiko isn’t about making perfect stitches”. So the question I often receive, “How big the stitches have to be” is irrelevant. I feel bad that they learned Sashiko that way (from someone who learned that way, too). Sashiko is like our days for me. We all have good days and bad days. It is unrealistic to make everyday as the “perfect” day, yet we try hard to make more “good days” as much as we can. After all, we wish to have a “good” life when we look at it from a bird’s-eye view. This Sashiko Furoshiki is one representation of this philosophy, and this Furoshiki is just the beginning of its journey. It should be “used” by someone, ideally. Sashiko is very ordinary for us (as Japanese), and therefore it can be so unique to you. I hope our story resonates with your days.

On August 13th and 14th, I will be visiting Pittsburgh for the first time. A long-established Gallery & Studio, Contemporary Craft (@sccpgh), invited me as a visiting artist/artisan. It is always a great honor to be a part of a nonprofit organization where I can be a small contribution to…

Shippou, one of the most beautiful and symbolic patterns in Sashiko, holds layers of meaning—just as learning the art itself holds deeper lessons beyond stitches. This March 2025, in Stuart, FL, I will be offering a special 3-Day Sashiko Workshop, beginning with the foundation of the craft, much like understanding…

Thank you for many reactions to the Natural Dye thread we introduced. Another photo of 2017 Collection. Pink/Purple Selection has 5 different colors. 2 Dyes (Madder and Lac Dye) and 5 colors. This is why Natural Dye is interesting. 先日ご紹介した草木染めの糸、沢山の反応を頂けて嬉しいです。今回はピンク系の色の紹介です。二種類の染色材で5色。これだから草木染めは……(やめられない&大変だ)。 2017-07-16 22:28:22 Source

This is very lovely, both the stitching and the philosophy.

Thank you for giving such pearls of wisdom. I am doing some embroidery work for a quilt that I am doing for my granddaughter. I always feel that I should do better. Now I will think of my work as one that comes from love and use peaceful thoughts as I do it. Still new to Sashiko but will apply the principle to all that I do.
