On August 13th and 14th, I will be visiting Pittsburgh for the first time. A long-established Gallery & Studio, Contemporary Craft (@sccpgh), invited me as a visiting artist/artisan. It is always a great honor to be a part of a nonprofit organization where I can be a small contribution to the Art & Crafting Society. The Full-Day Workshop on 14th is fully booked at this point. However, the lecture is open to the public. I will bring many Sashiko & Boro pieces I own & make. Visitors can touch, feel and “experience” the fabric I always talk about here.

☆

For the lecture registration, please visit their Eventbrite Page (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/visiting-artist-lecture-with-atsushi-futatsuya-in-person-virtual-registration-158030879615). I believe they prepared the waiting list for the Sashiko Workshop. If you are interested in coming, please DM me. I will try to contact them to see what the options are.

☆

I won’t be talking about anything new in the lecture. If you are a long-time follower, it will be the same message & stories you have heard. However, it is very important for me to repeat, and especially in the “lecture” setting. I hope to see/meet you there.

Anyone can make Sushi for their family. However, as a Japanese, I hope they explain what “Sushi” is to their family, especially for childrens who absorb new information. Stories & definitions about Sushi are available everywhere, especially if they know the Sushi’s origin is in Japan. They do not need…

Today, if you can, please sit down and stitch for a while. Just stitch. Stop searching for answers by asking Google & Alexa, and stop focusing on how we should be. Close your eyes. Feel the fabric, needle, and thread. Then, let the needle move to make stitches. Although I…

Many ask me for the “Answers” in Sashiko – correct definition, authentic description, and the “Rules” for stitching itself. I do not offer the answers as shorten & summarized answers can destroy the culture & practice without careful attention. It is like asking someone to summarize their life into one…
