atsushijp, 2021年2月21日

I would like to summarize this emotionally exhausting Sunday. 5 important messages from me. Please check the previous post why it was exhausting day today.

☆

① “Atsushi. Don’t waste your time. Just ignore them. Do something fun (like Sashiko) instead” is a valid advice. However, please understand that the “Cultural Appropriation” is the result of us ignoring them continuously. It is exhausting and maybe meaningless, but it isn’t a waste of time. My goal is to share stories so we can keep(protect) the “Japanese Sashiko” without (more than) unnecessary changes. I think I have ignored ignorance enough. I don’t enjoy the pain, but I knew this journey would be painful when I decided to do so. All the pains are good lessons to me.

☆

② I say, “There are reasons”. It is NOT that I want to keep them secret. It is most likely that the reasons are already explained somewhere. I try not to repeat the same story. There is a lot more to share in Sashiko. I don’t have time to spoon-feed, and don’t repeat the same stories every time I receive a question/issue. Please read 600+ posts here & 100+ articles on Patreon. If you don’t find the “story”, then I will explain it. So, read them before you accuse me.

☆

③ This is for who will(has) unfollow(ed) – so NOT you. “How many followers we have” is not my first interest. “Who follows us to share with” is what I care the most. So, please unfollow when you don’t like what I share. Don’t leave a nasty parting shot cuz it is the waste of time. One thing, though. Stop calling your stitching Sashiko/Boro when you unfollow. You are intentionally ignoring the voice of Japanese Sashiko artisans to justify your convenience/fun. It is THE “Cultural Appropriation (C/A)”. I will fight back. If you are here to learn, don’t worry too much about “C/A”. I am here to share.

☆

(Continue to the Comment for ④ and ⑤).

Mending Sunday. (Stitching) Speed isn’t really the priority for me. However, it is nice that it would take only 3~4 hours to enjoy minor mending for tomorrow’s denim. There are so many approaches to Mending & Sashiko… among those, with learning the “Form”, when I accept the possibility of a…

Another cultural observation here. ☆ In some culture (some Western), asking a question is admired, so people understand that asking questions is a good thing in general, correct? In Japanese culture, it is also good to ask questions in education (a teacher – a student relationship). However, asking a random…

February 8th. If you follow this account long enough, this is a kind reminder. If you are new, please remember (learn) today as Koto-Youka (事八日), the day for Hari Kuyou (針供養) in which a shrine/temple offer a ritual (ceremony) to farewell broken, unusable, or bent needles. ☆ In Hari-Kuyou, we…

I am sorry for the pain you have experienced because if others’ ignorance and rudeness. I am thankful that you continue to share your knowledge and experience with us here. I wish I could protect you from rude people who do not care what harm or pain they cause, but maybe that is not my place. I am here to learn not just technique but also philosophy and culture. Without philosophy and culture, the technique is empty. Again, thank you.

Love your work. I’m here to learn. So sorry you had to have such a painful experience from a bully, making fun of your culture and work.

A really big virtual hug to you. Some battles need someone’s leader it. I wish to know more trusted leaders in sashiko instead all the rubbish there. (Not as insult, as noise of misinformation). 🙌

its definitely not comedy; some words that might be able to describe it are bullying, harassment, unfairness, (it feels) denigrating, privilege/entitlement (that they think they should be allowed to harm you). there’s definitely other words but i hope this gives you a start to be able to describe it
