Witnessing a person realize the “rhythm of Unshin” in Sashiko stitching is the most rewarding moment in sharing the Sashiko. In 2016, I didn’t know what to share because everything about Sashiko was so ordinary for me. After studying for a few years in teaching the in-person workshops & developing the Online Sashiko Class, I am very happy to be able to offer an opportunity to share what we practice. The Sashiko I share occasionally became “philosophical”. However, the philosophy in Sashiko is not only the “thinking” in the brain, but more like a realization throughout the specific practice. Everytime I meet new friends on Live meetings after their learning, it brings me happiness that I can share it even in this strange time. Sashiko is more than just stitching. When a stitcher understands what it means, then the stitches themselves will be very satisfactory automatically.

We, as newbies in “privilege”, have to understand that “privilege” and “handicap/disadvantage” are not the same. I am NOT minimizing the hard work of people with difficulty. However, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t privileged. Also, privilege isn’t simple math. It doesn’t offset “have” and “don’t have”. Therefore, even in…

“Sashiko is a good meditation. It calms me down and helps me to get out of the panic.” I often see this type of description about Sashiko online. For me, as one Sashiko practitioner who once considered Sashiko as “Curse” and cause of all my suffering, this on-going image of…

I think you are blessed to have a language that is able to contain concepts so clearly. There is a moment when stitching that hands, mind and needle are all working together – english has no word, you just realise when you stop that you’ve just been transported by your work. When running, if lucky, the same thing can happen – the road, the stride, the effort, your breathing. The whole greater than the sum of its parts.
