atsushijp, 2020年3月22日

I think I got to the conclusion. “Wearing DIY fabric mask is Worse than wearing no mask IF A PERSON is stupid & ignorant”. You know how much I am against ignorance. I appreciate the information shared about “how to use fabric masks safely”. It is kind of common sense for the Japanese, so I did not realize the importance of sharing it. Be attentive & smart when you use the fabric mask. Again, please read (4) conditions I explained in the previous post. After 4 conditions & following the precaution, “Wearing a DIY fabric mask is better than not wearing masks”. ☆
Please read what I write mindfully. A comment & advice are very appreciated, especially if the advice is from an expert. It is my worst night-mare to spread the wrong information. I am still learning what is best for my family. When you read mindfully what I have been writing, you understand I am NOT replacing N95 with a fabric mask. You know I keep saying it is NOT the medical solution. You understand who I am – I do(did) not hoard the mask because I am relatively healthy. Stay home & Wash Hands & Keep Distance is of course important. After the best preventative measure, we still may get the virus.
☆
I know most of the comments are from good intentions. I really appreciate it. Misunderstanding happens when we are not on the same page. In SNS, I want you to be on my page & read between the lines to avoid misunderstanding (I don’t have access to learn who you are). So PLEASE READ and THINK before REACTING. I just want to prepare for the scenario where my family gets the virus AFTER implementing all of the obsessive Japanese cleanings & sanitizing. We are all in an extreme situation. Hospitals asking for sewing masks is quite Bad. Now in the US, “DIY Fabric Mask is Better than Wearing No Mask” in emergencies. This is my conclusion for now.

“Not knowing” is perfectly fine. We are all here to learn. Again, what I do not accept is “Intentional Ignorance” which is “knowing yet not respecting”. If today is the first day that you learn Sashiko is from Japan, I appreciate you reading it and hopefully you will learn something…

It was such a delightful day yesterday with talking to many Sashiko stitchers over the Zoom, from the recent Online Sashiko Class participants to the old-friends who found me almost 3 years ago when I just started the Sashiko Workshop in NYC. ☆ Moving needle & making even stitches while…

Another frequent question. “Can we do Sashiko stitching with a machine?”. Well, why not? Since a part of Sashiko’s definition is stitching for a decorative purpose, it could be done with a machine and they “can” call the machine stitching Sashiko. However, I also tell them that they may be…

Read a study on medical masks, homemade masks, and no masks. Wearing a medical mask is 3 times better than not wearing one. Wearing a homemade mask is 1.5 times better than not wearing one.

So true! I made masks for myself and my elderly neighbor before I took her to the food store and pharmacy yesterday. People looked at us as if we had grown an extra head. It’s an *extra* layer of protection, an *adjunct to social distancing.* The only danger is when people don’t wash the masks after use, or when people use them as an excuse to not practice social distancing; unfortunately there will always be ignorance, pandemic or not.
