The reason we practice overlay stitching instead of knots is simply it makes Sashiko pieces more smooth and beautiful. Also, Sashiko is a culture of “poverty” and therefore, they enjoyed both side of the fabric as the finished side (lining the fabric was kind of luxury.)

Again, there is no rule in Sashiko. It is perfectly fine with making knots. However, let me point out that there is a big difference between “choosing knots after learnin the overlay stitching” and “choosing knots without learning how to stop the thread with overlay stitching.” “choice” and “ability”. There is a big difference. Without the ability, the knots “could” be a sign of shame… espceially in the Japanese culture.

ちょっと厳しい事を書くかも知れません。
一般的な刺し子についての玉止めについて。私達は刺し子をする際に、玉止めはしません。大きな理由は、玉止めの感触が好きじゃないから……なのですが、同時に布の裏表を使おうとした(昔の)刺し子の智慧でもあると思っています（裏地をつけることは贅沢とされていた時代の話もあるので）。とはいえ、重ねをして糸を止めた布地の方が圧倒的に「優しい」です。他にも玉止めをしない理由はあるのですが、ここで「刺し子は玉止めOK」とする意見に、一言だけ。

玉止めOKなんです。ただ、「重ねができる技術がある上で玉止めをする」というのと、「重ねできないけど、玉止めだったら糸止まるからOK」では、全く意味合いが違ってきます。重ね、できなくても良いんです。玉止めでも良いんです。ただ、できないことを前面に出して、「刺し子は玉止めなんだ！」と主張してしまうことを「恥ずかしい」と思わないのが、どうも日本的な刺し子文化から外れてしまうな……と。

もっと言えば、こういう「恥」を指摘するのも日本文化から外れてしまうのですが、ただ、やっぱり誰かが言わないと……と思い、この投稿です。日本語に気合が入っておりますが、対象は英語圏の皆様です（笑）英語と刺し子、最近、なんかいろんな違和感を感じすぎて……。
