I am spending some time to “re-define” what Boro is for us. When I read the description about Boro saying “You can do whatever you want since it is Boro (recycling of what we have)” I feel kind of strange. If it is merely the recycling, what is the point of calling it “Boro”? Wouldn’t be okay to just call it recycling and patching the fabric? Why do we need to use the word Boro?

Upcycle, Slow fashion, Wabi-Sabi. There are many keywords for Sashiko. For me, I find the boro (inspired) piece with 2 factors so beautiful and attractive. They are “Pride (Curiosity) ” and “Appreciation (Attachment)” to the fabric. ☆

「襤褸はリサイクルだ！エコだ！（侘び寂びだ！）」。英語圏での襤褸への見解を”めちゃくちゃ雑に”纏めるとこんな感じになると思うのですが、どーも、この文章を読むたびに、口の中に変な味を感じるんです。ちょっと怒りにも似てるのかも。襤褸って言葉、わざわざ使わなくて良くない！？ってなるのです。

「リサイクルだから何を使っても良い」という襤褸の根本は良いの。でも、「選択肢」がある現代なのだから、「襤褸と、その襤褸を作る刺し子を支えてきた日本の製造業と作家」を応援するという気持ちが欲しいのかも知れない。俺が良く言う「我」になってるのだとは思うのだけど、でも「糸も布もなんでも良くて、捨てられる布を繋ぎ合わせれば襤褸だよ」っていうのがどうも違和感なんですよ。「リサイクルだから何でも良い」ってどこから広まったんだろう。

個人的な襤褸の好みは、「（女性の）意地（興味 / 遊び心）」と「布への感謝（執着）」です。この2点が揃った襤褸は、カッコいいし、眺めてて惚れる。それ以外は、どうも「ただ繋ぎ合わせただけじゃん」とダサく見えてしまう。本来の襤褸が、この俺の襤褸への好みと定義と一致するとは限らないのだけど、でも、どうも英語圏でのBOROっぽさが、俺の意識とはズレてくるのよね。さて、皆様。どうなんでしょうか。

As I keep repeating, it isn’t about being right or wrong. I would like to just share the possibility of “more than what we already know”. Sashiko isn’t only about the technique, and Boro isn’t only about the recycling. There are more stories for both words, and reasons why we follow the specific tradition. What kind of “Boro” and “Sashiko” are you enjoying? I gotta write more about this topic 😆

Besides “Time” “Sashiko” and “Recycling” I think “Culture” could be called the 4th one that the other three concepts stand on? I don’t know. I like to “do/make sashiko” but I would feel strange to call anything i made that was old, sashiko stitched and recycled “Boro”.

基本的に襤褸って、必要に迫られてのリサイクルですよね。限られた物の中でそれでも少しでも丈夫に少しでも見た目良く…丁寧に想いを込めて補修を繰り返した結果。決してなんでも良かった訳じゃない。だから”何でも良い”だと本質からズレてしまう気がするんじゃないかなぁ…
