I am struggling to write a blog post about “Sashiko & Art”. Since I am not a traditional artist (I have never “studied” Art), I am confused by the terminology. I know what Sashiko is, but I am lost at what “Art” indicate in terms of definition. What is the definition of Art for you? I felt natural when I read a quate “The art has no function (therefore it is the art)”.
☆
Please teach (Share with) me, if you have your own definition of Art. Without the definition, I cannot discuss on the topic of “Is Sashiko Art?” Happy Holidays!!!
☆

I have been a bit busy recently. Lack of preparation leads me to enjoy simple running stitch on Indigo Dyed Furoshiki. This is “free-style Sashiko.” No preparation. No transferring patterns. I simply move my needle to feel “it” to be mindful. …

Getting ready for the Sashiko Workshop next week in Lewisburg, PA. Up on a request, I offer the Sashiko workshop (mostly private – but happy to announce to make it semi-private & shared workshop) in the town where I live. A good part of workshop in Lewisburg is that I…

Sashiko is totally art! It’s art when on a tapestry meant for hanging in a gallery, or a kimono meant to wear 100 years ago. Craft and clothing can and often are art, having a purpose and also beauty. Boro may have been some shame to those Japanese generations ago, but honestly, what they had created is so beautiful. I think sashiko is art and craft.

Art to me is an outward expression from what’s in my heart. I create art with fiber and yarn.

Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions, intuitions and desires. It is about sharing the way we experience the world. We can use any media we like, and of course needles and threads are included. Merry Christmas

IHI! definitely i would say sashiko is a textile Art. and evermore it has a lot to do with the person who does ot..if you feel you are creating something each time you do sashiko.creation is part of Art..and art is something that characterizes us like humans.I do think art has a function..all the way through history it had a different one!

‘Art has no function’ is a bit problematic for me- probably the definition is closer to ‘something that evokes emotion’ ?

The saying “Art is in the eye of the beholder “ is always true. But the word ART is not only a noun but a verb. Art to me is the ability to do something well and have knowledge of (whether schooled or not) and to be seemingly created effortlessly (a bit of personal magic there). Art doesn’t have to be formally trained. Most people practice/learn their art from just doing. Bring self taught is an education also. One learns so much from trial and error. You may know more than a traditionally educated artist but you don’t realize that. People who ask about your art want to know what your thought process is ; how you arrived at the decisions you made. I always tell non-quilter people (who are always aghast) who ask how I made a quilt that’s it’s an art form and not everyone can do it. Who would ever take whole fabric and cut it up into odd shapes of hundreds/thousands of smaller pieces and sew it back together? Or the thousands of stitches in sashiko? What about mosaics? Art is a function of any type of creativity. If you enjoy what you create (however good or bad it may be to others) then it’s art. So yes, sashiko is definitely an art form. You don’t see it that way because it is so natural to you. The original function of sashiko was out of necessity; but it doesn’t mean that it couldn’t be in a creative beautiful way. Think about the Gee’s Bend quilters. They created out of necessity but also in the process they put conscious effort into creating a pleasing outcome. This answer to your question may wander a bit and be a little lengthy 🤦🏼‍♀️….Your art form doesn’t seem to you to be art because it comes to you so easy but try to view it from another’s point of view 🎨

Thank you for all the comments. I will keep researching and share my idea. Just quick question. Let’s say, do you consider a chair from IKEA as art…?

To me, art is when you do something in order to communicate something. For example: I can knit a pair of socks because I want socks, and it is a piece of craft. But say that I knit a pair of socks and say a prayer every time knit a stitch, and then exhibit the socks together with the recording of my voice, now I call it art! Because I want people to understand the amount of love that goes into knitting the socks. This is my own definition 🙂
