We can find many kinds of descriptions about Sashiko in English. “Slow-stitching”, “Beauty in Imperfection”, “Meditative Stitching”… and you know better than I do. All of these are not “wrong”, but they are insufficient by themselves. Before defining what is “the sufficient Sashiko description”, it is critical to understand the…

When I write about the “language” difference, some read it superficially as if I am excluding non-Japanese. They say, “So you are saying we need to be fluent in Japanese to enjoy Sashiko?”. No, I am NOT saying it at all. ☆ You do not need the Japanese language to…

In today’s society with the Internet, anyone can say anything on any topics. We as readers/listeners have to be mindful of what we are reading/listening, and learning. Unlike the past, nothing will validate one’s practice but oneself. I can only hope, but I sincerely hope you are learning Sashiko(and Boro)…

I sincerely hope that my message is clear and not twisted. I want everyone to enjoy Sashiko. Yes, I demand respect (to Japanese Culture – not me). Yes, I make strong statements. Yes, some of my messages seem to be difficult to read/listen to. Some say that I disturb the…

I share a lot about Sashiko. However, it doesn’t mean that I give up the copyright. I believe that Sashiko is the public wisdom of Japanese. Therefore, I share the unedited videos of my stitching. Anyone can learn by just watching. ☆ However, if you make “money” and/or “teach someone”…

I receive many questions regarding “Am I correct?”. It is a kind question because it shows they care about the origin. Some do not even care if they are correct or not. However, as you may know already with following this account, it is not easy to define what is…

☆ – – – ☆ I gave this bag as a present to my daughter for being a “big girl” to go on a trip with me for 6 days without her mother. Since then, she keeps using it even (or especially) when she sleeps in her…

atsushijp, 2020年3月10日

Unshin, Hitomezashi, Kasane, Kogin, Gushinui, Boro and may more… There are numbers of Japanese words that cannot be translated into other languages without proper explanation. The explanation often requires the understanding of not only the technique, but also the background of the word. Am I a master in those? No,…

atsushijp, 2020年3月9日

I believe anyone who takes my workshop knows how much I prepare for my teaching opportunity. I have so many years of experience in Sashiko, but so what? Practicing and teaching is different. I am so worried of delivering the incorrect/inappropriate message because what I speak is an action of…

atsushijp, 2020年3月8日

My “ordinary” is someone’s “extra-ordinary”. The difference in culture, in how we grow up, is quite significant. Therefore, I ask to try to respect the Japanese culture behind Sashiko. ☆ In my culture, “teaching” is something special. The famous word, “Sensei”, is often referred to a teacher. The word itself…
