What makes Keiko so special is this “artistic sense” to put Sashiko fabric toget

atsushijp, 2018年12月17日

What makes Keiko so special is this “artistic sense” to put Sashiko fabric together. To speak of extremes, “anyone” can do Sashiko. There are many good artisans with super skills. What makes Sashiko to the art is someone like Keiko, the artist who understands (loves) Sashiko, I believe. It is our primary reason to share Sashiko so we all can be the one who loves Sashiko.

15 Sashiko artisans (Atsushi’s students/friends) stitching Keiko’s original pattern on large piece of fabric, then we patchwork everything into one Sashiko Jacket. I don’t know the exact word in English for this, but it is a product of “Goen (ご縁) – our paths crossed magically”. It is a big challenge…

I often say “Sashiko(Boro) is NOT ___”. For example, I say, Sashiko is NOT a word for (visible) mending (although mending is an important part of Sashiko). When I say “Sashiko is NOT___”, some immediately demand answers and definitions saying, “then what is Sashiko?”. I understand their need in their…
