“I am confused. Don’t we have to do… in Sashiko?”. I occasionally receive this type of “question” or “criticism”. This is another reason I say that it is “too late” to pass down the Sashiko we (as Japanese) have been practicing. In the modern/west philosophy, we worship authority & rules (Right/Wrong). As the result, the “Core Essence” of Sashiko has been compromised by those who modify Sashiko for their profit. There is no such a thing as “MUST” in Sashiko – if so, one “must” acknowledge the Japanese philosophy behind the word Sashiko.

It is like… umm… someone commenting on your dinner, Pizza, saying that you aren’t supposed to put Pepper as toppings. They say it has to be Peperoni. You may laugh and dismiss, or even ask why to entertain – but you would never think it is so wrong to put Pepper. Unfortunately, this is what is happening in Sashiko – and it is happening outside of Japanese language. On Mars, they may have rules for Pizza because of the one who brought a slice to Mars… What if Martian has more influence on the culture of Pizza over ours?

This is a crazy analogy – but I want to preserve the way of “any toppings” – Preference. It is our (teachers & translators) neglect to miss the connection & we are responsible to rewind the trend so that we can pass down the true essence of Sashiko. No Rules – Just Preference & Rich Wisdom.

「刺し子はお味噌汁みたいなもんだ」と言い始めてもう7年程。今でもその思いは変わっていません。日本の食卓を支えるお味噌汁は、時代の中で様々な変化を遂げながらも、本質的なところは変わっていません。「お味噌汁はこうでなきゃいけない」という家庭内のルールや地域の慣習はあるかもしれません。ただ、お味噌汁は当たり前すぎて、「絶対的な正解やルール」に対しては苦笑いをして本気にしないだけのアソビがあるのです。夕飯に添えられた、玉ねぎと豆腐のお味噌汁。いりこ出汁と麹味噌。そこで「そのお味噌汁は間違っている。昆布出汁に白味噌、玉ねぎではなく長葱が正解だ」なんていう突っ込みが入っても、間に受ける人は日本人にはいないのではと思うのです。そんなん好みやん…と。

刺し子も一緒で、家庭毎、地域毎に様々な特色はあるにしろ、基本的に好みです。正解も間違いもありません。もちろん、各々のルールは存在しますが、それはあくまで好みの範囲であって他の刺し子に対して強制できるようなものでもなく、やっぱり上記のお味噌汁と同様の例え話が成立します。でも、残念ながら、刺し子は英語圏で西洋の「絶対的答え＆権威」に塗り替えられようとしていて、結果、日本語も話せない人が「わけわからん。お味噌汁に玉ねぎやいりこ出汁は使ったらいけないのに…」と議論をふっかけてくるのです。

実際に混乱しながら質問してくる人が問題なのではなく、これは「教える人」と「翻訳する人」の責任です。本質を理解しないまま、お金になるからと教え始めるからこうなってしまう。翻訳も一緒です。AIも「縁」は訳せないと言っているのに、簡単に「答え」として訳してしまう。これは私も含め、教える人間が責任を持ってある程度巻き戻す必要があるんじゃないかと思っています。このままだと日常に正解ができてしまう。それはもう、日常と違う。
