If you have been practicing Sashiko for a while, you will probably know which pattern I am aiming to finish with. It is an in-process pattern of a popular pattern, yet I also like this stage. Don’t you think it can be identified as the “Pattern”?

In fact, all of the geometric patterns are a part (in-progress) of another pattern, or elaboration of another pattern. The pattern today is one result of its Sashiko, so is tomorrow’s. In today’s Sashiko, many focus on the “outcome”. They showcase the result of their artistry, creativity, and “Skill”. There is nothing wrong with it – as “showcasing” is one process of Sashiko, too. However, Sashiko can be more than just showcasing one’s skill.

The “look” will be different based on when/where we look at. I sometimes feel that it is like our lives. A person can be an angel to someone, yet an evil for others. A person swinging Justice can be a desperado in other value-systems. Therefore, I ask for the acknowledgement of the difference between cultures when they “share” what Sashiko is. One’s “ordinary” can be another’s “extraordinary” – and Sashiko can represent our (Japanese) Ordinary, and I am here to respect that.

また新たな柄に手を出しました…と言っても、とても頻繁に刺し子に登場する柄で、刺し子をしている人であればこの段階でなんの柄かわかる人も多いはずかなと。刺し子では様々な幾何学模様を使います。模様とは面白いもので、ほぼ全ての模様は方眼、あるいは斜方眼から作り出すことができます。全ての模様は、何か違う模様を描き続けたものであったり、またはその途中の模様だったり。どの場所で区切るかで見た目が変わるのは、人様の生き様と似ているなぁと思ったり。ある時には正義の使者でも、区切る場所が違えば極悪人と呼ばれる人は歴史上には沢山存在して。身近にも大なり小なりそういうことはあって。

「刺し子は人生の縮図だ」なんて大袈裟なことは言うつもりはありませんが、ただ、刺し子から学べることは沢山あると思うのです。それこそ、大袈裟かもしれませんが、日本的な考え方（素晴らしいのもヤバいのも含めて）は、刺し子と言うレンズを通すと説明しやすかったりします。現代において、刺し子は「完成系」を追求する手芸になっています。どこかに完成が存在し、またその完成に向けて手を動かす。それは私達が「成功」と呼ばれる何かを目指して努力し続ける姿と似ているのかもしれません。ただ、ふと思うのは、その過程も素敵で、また過程に注目をすると完成なんてものは存在するようで存在しないのだろうとすら思うのですよ。

当たり前のように、この柄には完成が存在します。七宝です。ただ、その七宝が完成した先に何が存在しうるかを考えながら、想像しながら、針を動かすのも楽しかったりします。刺し子が好きな人に出会えたことが何よりもの宝物です。今の社会では「刺し子が好き」と言うよりは、「刺し子が好きと宣伝することで得られる何かが好き」と言う人も沢山いらっしゃるでしょうから。
