As the words “Sashiko” and “Boro” became famous, I came across a celebration of books & exhibitions introducing the Sashiko/Boro pieces made decades & even centuries ago. Not many, but there are some really good books explaining a Sashiko with photos of actual Sashiko/Boro items the Japanese made (I do NOT have any recommendation in books explaining “The Sashiko” or answer, or technique of Sashiko – therefore I made the Domestika course).
☆
We had a fantastic “Boro” museum in Japan, and we can find small yet significant exhibitions with authentic Sashiko/Boro pieces. Along with the excellent books, it is important for us to preserve opportunities to enjoy history & Art made in the past. At the same time, more importantly, I would like to shout out that Sashiko isn’t just about history & Art in the past. Sashiko has changed its form a lot – but there are still Sashiko Artisans who make the Sashiko Items (Jacket, Blankets, and more) with similar design & approach from the “authentics” behind the display glass or on print. We are one of them, and our students are going to be one of them. We lost many of them, but they are indeed one of those who kept making the “Sashiko” we can find in books & exhibitions.
☆
Sashiko isn’t in the past yet. Please do not leave “Sashiko” behind as if it ended in the past. We are still here actively stitching with years of tradition – and I am teaching the Core & Essence so that anyone can be a part of this tradition (which became extraordinary in today’s society).
☆
I have In-Person Workshops scheduled in 2025. Online Sashiko Class will be available through 2024. Please be part of “Japanese Sashiko” & be part of our future exhibition of celebrating the thin, yet continuous legacy.

| I asked my Japanese Sashiko friends to share their photos with the tag. I have my own Sashiko. This journey is NOT to define my Sashiko as the Sashiko. It is a process of sharing how the Japanese enjoy Sashiko – which may be different from the current trend….

In this account, I am sharing the Sashiko & how “different” the understanding can be. Not “Wrong”, just “different” – because of this difference, the understanding of Sashiko in English can be insufficient. After all, “Sashiko” is a Japanese practice rooted into the Japanese culture. The culture is deeply related…
