本質 (HonShitsu) is another Japanese word I am trying to convey the message with in English. 本質 can be translated “Essence”, “(True) Nature”, and “Heart of the matter”. In my interpretation in Sashiko, I use the word “HonShitsu” when I describe “What it really is/was”. So, what is Sashiko’s “Honshitsu”? I believe it is a “Prayer”. Sashiko is a form of, silent, quiet, yet passionate Prayers done by ordinary Japanese.
☆
We live in an abundance of choices. We may define Wealth based on the level/amount of choices we have. “Choice” brought a big change that all humans were longing for. Sashiko is experiencing the same change, and I accept many interpretations & applications of Sashiko. I just want to leave notes regarding the “HonShitsu” of Sashiko – which is prayer to someone who we care for. Sashiko “wasn’t” for mainly ourselves as many other ordinary practices were for someone else. It is precious that we can do Sashiko for ourselves for our own purpose. I just believe it is important to pass down the Stories for what it really “was” and “is” so that we can be mindful of what it “can be”.
☆
I like Sashiko done for someone else. Many ask me “What are you going to do with your stitching”. Well. I am stitching for the “Future” of Sashiko who may find my stitching & stories around it helpful to understand what Sashiko can be. In the photo, one is so called “traditional”, and one can be considered as Art. Both of them are Sashiko. I hope that we live in a society where it isn’t too much to wish for the preservation of Stories in our own culture. I may be speaking up for the “choice” of “what we (human) are/can be” throughout the stories of Sashiko.

One of the strong wishes I have in sharing Stories here is to remind of the power of imagination. “Reading between lines” is critical to understanding Japanese culture. Imagination helps us to read between lines. So, try to read what is not “written”, instead of reacting to what you think…

In 2015, I didn’t even know what I knew. Last 5 years, I learned what/how I can contribute to the Sashiko/Boro by sharing the “ordinary” I have received. I didn’t know the Sashiko I received was unique enough to surprise others. There are many people who have been supporting me…
