Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

A few years ago, I came across a discussion stating that Sashiko is all about Patterns. Well… the patterns are a very important aspect of Sashiko, but I felt strange by reading the discussion as they do not realize those people who kept stitching the same patterns. In fact, I often feel that the pattern doesn’t matter as long as I can keep stitching. As an antithesis to the current trend, I started a project [100 meters of Asanoha Sashiko].
☆
The photo is a process called “Mizutoushi”. After this, Sashiko’s stitched fabric will be “ready” to stand on the stage. If you follow this account long enough, you may remember me stitching only Asanoha – this will be a milestone of the project. Well, at this point, it isn’t 100 meters yet. I will measure how many meters after checking if the patterns are “completed”. I didn’t want to do Mizutoushi over winter, and I didn’t want to wait until next summer – so please consider it as a “in-progress” project.
☆
The rhythm. The Stitching Practice itself is a very important part of Sashiko along with Patterns. It isn’t one or the other. I teach how to enjoy the rhythm – as stitching the favorite patterns with the rhythm is the great experience in Sashiko.

Please, please do not follow someone’s definition so easily. Please do not be certain of a (quick) answer someone gives you. It is “your” life – as you find “Sashiko”, I want you to experience the beauty of “No Definition” or “No (Specific) Answers”. Therefore, I say, those Western Sashiko…

Do you feel “fear” when I write something about Sashiko (& possibly about Cultural Appropriation)? I am aware that I am privileged in Sashiko – a native Japanese who was born in the Sasiko family with support from artisans with 35+ years of experience. Please understand that my goal is…

One of the biggest learnings in Japan this spring was from the master of Koginsashi – Takagi Sensei & members of Mokuyoukai. The Instagram post is a bit “instantaneous” to share what the learning from them is… but it is indeed the moment of “change” in my Sashiko Life. ☆…

Great words as usual. Rhythm makes for good stitches and good stitches lead to rhythm. In my knitting if I have rhythm then my stitches are even and the piece is all the better so your words are true for more than Sashiko.
