When I talk about what Sashiko and Boro really are to us (Japanese Sashiko Artis

When I talk about what Sashiko and Boro really are to us (Japanese Sashiko Artisans), some react so strongly & defensively as if I am a “Party Popper”. I am not spoiling the fun – I just want it to be more fun & enjoyable. I am happy with the Boro’s influence on the sustainable environment and more careful society. So, “Recreating Boro” is probably better than buying disposable cloth – however, we have 1 point to keep in our minds. It is “Choice”.
☆
First, unlike today’s Boro scene with a big focus on “Art”, Boro isn’t (wasn’t) something to make. In an authentic way to explain, Boro “happened” as they didn’t have choices. If they could dispose of a piece of fabric, they would – but they needed it no matter how damaged it was as they didn’t have the replacement. One milestone of fabric’s life is so called Zokin, and then Boro. In this context, any fabric including “disposable cloth” can be Zokin/Boro at some point. It is just a matter of Choice of “When” to dispose.
☆
As it “happens”, any type of fabric & threads can be Zokin/Boro. However, please remember, we have “choices”. The goal of Sashiko is to make it last longer. The longer it lasts, the closer it gets to the later stations. One can use any threads for making anything… but when they want to have the similar look of “authentic items”, then I recommend the wisdom we cultivated. Therefore, I keep saying “Thread Matters”. Not only the experience & result right after stitching, my words(stories) will be proven in decades & possible after centuries. At least, my confidence comes from 40~50 years of wisdom. Thread Matters.

A photo of “Boro-inspired” piece with many knots. Although I shared our “preference” of not using knots on our Sashiko project (on our website), there is no problem in using knots. In fact, some pieces would require the knots to be there. ☆ When we make “Boro & Boro to…

A group photo with Sashiko artisans in Otsuchi. The bag they hold is made by each artisan. Their works look great, and they improved their Sashiko skills by a lot. I feel happy, and somewhat proud of them. 大槌刺し子の皆さんと。 それぞれ手に持ってらっしゃるのは自分で作られた作品。本当に上達されたなぁと。嬉しい限りです。 2017-10-18 18:30:40 Source

An Experiment of “Can Sashiko shine on the $2.00 fabric from Walmart” is moving

An Experiment of “Can Sashiko shine on the $2.00 fabric from Walmart” is moving forward well. Can you believe this was a piece of cheap fabric? Sashiko can transfer the plain fabric to the completely one-of-a-kind fabric. — You can check the whole “un-edited” process on Youtube! Also, you can…
