Well. I am back (somewhat recovered). I appreciate all of your warm comments for the cancellation of Live Streaming. I apologize for the last minute decision & I hope I can offer it next week. Well. Usually, there are reasons when I become weak… I hope, one day, I can be freed from that weakness. Well. I probably should protect the “weakness” to preserve the Sashiko we practice… Well…
☆
Last 5 years or so, I have been speaking up the importance of “acknowledging/identifying the upstream” when one teaches about Cultural Practice (here Sashiko) to others, especially when the teacher doesn’t belong to the Culture. 7 years ago, no one on the Internet used the Palm Thimble with thumb & middle finger in Sashiko & its Unshin. Now, we can find so many videos “teaching” others how it should be done. Most of them do not clarify where they learned from – and often they say “I taught myself”. It is probably true that they learned without a specific teacher but by watching someone’s video… so, to make it more clear, I will keep asking “the upstream” more. Please let me know when/where you learned Sashiko’s Unshin? Youtube is just fine as we can narrow it down to the Upstream.
☆
I am NOT saying that I am the one who invented this Unshin. I do not own it, either. No one should own it. I believe there are many Japanese who practiced Sashiko with the same style (at least decades from my family Sashiko). However… I am probably the only one who has been sharing it online continuously. For that, pretty much all of the videos after 2018 “could” be a copy of what I shared. Copy is fine. I even encourage you to copy it. I just want to make sure the upstream to preserve the culture & avoid unfortunate Cultural Appropriation. I appreciate your help on this to clarify the root.

It is funny to keep diagnosing my own emotion… and I concluded that it is okay to have “Anger”. I realized that “Anger” isn’t 100% accurate – the word to describe my emotion seems not to exist in English, and therefore it was difficult for me to explain. It is…

45th day of “Stay Home (since my daughter started staying home)”. The extraordinary days became somewhat the ordinary, yet it is just an adjustment and our body & mind are not as ordinary as they appear. In those extraordinary days, we breathe very shallow. “Shallowness” is not good in both…

class=”instagram-media” data-instgrm-permalink=”https://www.instagram.com/reel/CEMUiXbJbwr/” data-instgrm-version=”14″ style=” background: border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% – 2px); width:calc(100% – 2px);”>  2020-08-22 09:01:45 Source

Acknowledging the upstream is central to anyone I teach.

Honestly, I don’t recall how I found my way to you. Your sashiko online class was one of my COVID learning. Very happy to be a follower and continuous learner since then. I acknowledge your teaching to whoever asks me. With gratitude:🙏

This is one of the reasons why I hate the phrase “I taught myself”, and “I’m self taught”. It’s not honest. If someone learned from books or videos on YouTube, then they had a teacher.
