Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

atsushijp, 2024年8月27日

I will be in Brooklyn (@loopoftheloom, Dumbo) this coming weekend, August 3rd & 4th for Sashiko Workshops. The studio offers Trunk Sale from 1pm to 5pm, with some of our authentic Sashiko supplies & actual Sashiko pieces we have stitched. I won’t be able to say hello until 4 pm or so as I would like to focus on the workshop – however, if you are nearby, please make a visit to touch what we make. I hope you can feel the “difference” in the Sashiko we practice & Sashiko introduced in English today.

☆

When I bring Sashiko pieces, like this tapestry or Jackets, I often encourage students to touch them, feel them, and even “wear” them. After all, it is just a piece of Fabric – yet it is a piece of fabric with so many stories. We won’t have enough time to share all the stories behind the fabric, but I believe they can feel the “significance & existence” of stories behind. When they feel “it” – let’s say, “spirit” – I don’t think they can say “whatever is fine” in Sashiko. I do not think there is such a thing as “Right” and “Wrong” in Sashiko – but “Whatever” as a way to stop caring for the stories behind the handmade items are completely against my understanding of “Art” and “Craft”.

*[Core & Essence (C/E)] Workshop is sold out – [Application & Practice] has a few seats available, but C/E is a prerequisite. C/E can be completed online (if we hurry, we can arrange one by this Sunday). Hope to see you there.

In Japan, the term between August 13th to 16th is known as “Obon” (slightly varies on yearly calendar, and it can be in July based on Area). While Obon, we offer ceremonies/rituals to have our ancestors back to us (to the house). The story originated in Buddhism, and as a…

Shippou indicate the 7 treasures in Buddhism Sutra. As a pattern, it represents a good wellness because of its continuous round lines. We are very fortunate to get know of you. We will keep uploading our Sashiko works here! — 2018-05-25 16:37:49 Source

This isn’t really about Sashiko, but I made a video about “a technique (wisdom)” of hand-stitching. I don’t know where I learned by whom… but, I just learned that sharing this technique may be helpful for some beginners. There are many other ways to make knots in hand-stitching. First of…
