I have been with Sashiko since my birth. It means I had a big “artisans communities” regardless of their size, type of craft, and whether I liked it or not. In the last 30 years, I have seen many people choose to quit. Not so much “bankruptcy”, more like a mindful decision of “ending it”. In my youth, I thought I would be the one to make that decision in Sashiko – now, I am desperately looking for the way out while another artisan puts their tools on the side.
☆
“A culture” does NOT end so easily even if we lose artisans. However, the culture will be lost quite fast when “artisans who make the tools/supply to the craft” decide to quit. No one can be the artisan by themselves – it requires a circulation and we have somewhat balanced sustainability – and therefore we have so many beautiful traditions.
☆
The reason I keep speaking up about Sashiko & its Culture is to protect this sustainable system, which is, unfortunately, severely damaged. A superficial sustainability based on ignorance & arrogance violently causes damage to the Culture. Yes, it is important to pay attention to the environmental issue. I do care. My point is: Both Environmental & Cultural Sustainability can coexist simultaneously. (It was so painful to see soup on Van Gogh’s painting). The dualistic thinking of “Art/Culture OR Climate” is the cause of environmental issues. The only thing we have to do is to “acknowledge” it, and understand who we are supporting directly, and more importantly indirectly. A short video I contributed (It is Roxana’s @outofdboxproductions great work!) is advocating how one’s justice can violently damage another’s, and it is not necessary when we care. I don’t know if the same video will be shown in the festival, but Roxana gave me permission to upload it on Youtube a while ago. I will share the link to the video on Story. Your decision will make the future.

Sashiko on my wife’s cotton pants. Order to made stitching from her. A bit of playfulness with using the variegated color in the Asano-ha pattern. I now take orders if you want me to stitch 🙂 刺し子サンプルジーンズを見て、「あらお洒落」と言ってくれた妻のコットンパンツへの刺し子。遊び心を入れて、染分色の刺し子糸を使ったりしてます。 2017-08-04 19:03:17 Source

Thank you for sharing so many beautiful photos and stories so we can learn about the history and culture of Sashiko. It enhances the beauty of the stitching and textiles to know why they were created and to contemplate all those who stitched over the decades. A beautiful life’s work to teach others to appreciate the world you grew up in. So sorry there are trolls and cruelly ignorant people😢
