I am still astonished that the word “Boro” has become so popular. Many know Boro, and they often “Compare” the words “Boro and Sashiko”. Well. Among many kinds of definitions, one big misunderstanding regarding these 2 words is the “Comparison” like “Sashiko vs Boro (technique)”. Sashiko is a technique of xxx and Boro is a technique of yyy… haven’t you heard of this type of discussion? The comparison itself is incorrect. If I were to correct violently, it would be “Sashiko, then Boro”. Sashiko is a vehicle, and Boro is a Station.

Another Word getting popular is “Zokin”. Recently, the video I made a few years ago about Zokin got more views than usual. Zokin is another station, so we cannot compare Sashiko & Zokin (comparisons between Zokin & Boro are possible).

You can find the details on a Youtube video – one thing I need to clarify is that Both Boro & Zokin are associated with “Dirtiness” for Japanese. It never should be under/near food… Unnecessary Romanization “can” justify ignorance, and I want you to help me to slow it down. I share stories – so please learn first before “fantasize” them to the Art more than necessary.

「ぼろ・襤褸」という言葉が「BORO」となり、美術的観点からの価値が見出されて、もう20年くらい経つでしょうか。浅草に存在したアミューズミュージアムでの展示は、その魅力を十分に伝えるものだったと思います。今でも襤褸をBOROとして昇華されていらっしゃる方々は沢山いて、デザイナーさんだったり古美術のお店だったりと、沢山学ばせて頂いています。

同時に、「拠り所」を失ってしまった空白は否めません。日本語以外で襤褸を丁寧に紹介できる人も多くはありません。そもそも、まだまだ日本人にとって、「ぼろ」とは汚いものというイメージがあると思います。私もそう。その「汚いもの」という前提の上で、芸術として昇華するのは進化だと思うのですが、残念ながら今の流行では学びを吹っ飛ばして「アートだったら何でもいい」となってしまっているように思います。

「雑巾」も同様の流れです。雑巾を額に入れてアートとして家に飾る…という話を聞いたことがあります。それにお金を出す（西洋）人が存在することも。給食の牛乳やらなんやらを吸った、灰色のバケツの底に沈む雑巾を絞ってきた小学生としては、なんだかなぁと（笑）。いや、良いんですよ。自由です。でも、雑巾はお願いだから食卓には置かないで…と思ってしまうのですよ。

ちなみに、刺し子と雑巾と襤褸は関係性があります。というか同じ線上に存在して、刺し子が電車（手段）なら、雑巾と襤褸は駅（到着地点）です。「ふきん」や「台拭き」も駅の一つです。不必要になった布に刺し子（針仕事）をすることで「雑巾」になります。使い続けて、針を通し続けるといずれ「襤褸」になります。襤褸は終着駅の「廃棄」の一歩手前です。こういう話を知った上で、雑巾や襤褸を楽しんでほしいと思うのです。個人的には雑巾は楽しむもんじゃなく使うもんだとは思っていますが…アートならアートで良いんです。ただ、原点を無視しちゃいけない。
