Combining all the platform I work on – IG/FB, Youtube, GiveButter(Webinars), Pat

Combining all the platform I work on – IG/FB, Youtube, GiveButter(Webinars), Patreon (Articles) and our business website @UpcycleStitches, I share pretty much everything about the Sashiko we practice, from Technique to Information perspective. Besides Patreon (which asks for support), everything is free. I even ask the audience to copy what we do. Why do I do that? Because my goal is to “pass down” the Sashiko we have been practicing.

☆

“Copying” is good. However, it doesn’t mean that they can claim they “taught” themselves. Self-Study is a common way to learn something in the Internet Society. Therefore, it is extremely important to acknowledge where/whom they self-studied with. Before 2017, I hadn’t seen any videos with “Unshin” or “Sashiko Running Stitch” the way I do. Now, many people share their Unshin in the similar (identical) way as I do on SNS. Some even “teach” Sashiko by claiming they taught themselves… I ask them to share who they learned from. If they learn from my videos, great that they copied. All I ask is an acknowledgement. If it were from other Japanese, I would LOVE to meet the other Sashiko teachers who teach the same posture (who had been teaching Sashiko for 10~20 years because a Japanese person may teach Sashiko by watching our videos in this trend) – which we have not met besides ones from our family.

☆

“Copying” will not complete Sashiko Learning, though. There is one more element besides “Technique” and “Information”. This can be learned by either watching Live Streaming over and over, or joining my class. That’s the reason I receive good reviews. Anyhow, All I ask is to acknowledge so that we can “protect” the “Upstream”.

Another frequent question in Sashiko. “Which side should I look when stitching?” and then following “Should the back side look as good as the front side?” If you follow me long enough, you know I will say, no “should” but it “can”. ☆ In Sashiko, the mending was(is) a last…

Since my youth, I often receive a request for a talk as they ask for my advice or what I think/feel. It is quite strange as I neither have any degree in counseling nor training in coaching. I know how significant the counseling degree means (as my wife’s profession), and…

To not acknowledge a teacher is one of the worst kinds of disrespect and presumption. You are right to ask for acknowledgment and respect for your art. You are a very fine teacher who has taught me the importance of daily practice. Unshin takes LOTS of practice. My stitches are improving albeit slowly. Thank you!

Bonjour ! Merci 🙏😉

Question please … is unshin the stitch used to make/join the pieces of a kimono? If not, what is the name of that stitch please. I buy kimonos that have been torn, or marked, unable to be restored to their previous glory, and make them into useable / wearable items. I’m astounded at the precision hand stitching used to create them. Thank you 👏
