Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

We usually choose what we wear. Interestingly, though, in my life of adding many Sashiko & living with Sashiko, I sometimes encounter the case that “Clothes/Garment” choose whom they would be worn. This is one of the shirts that I now hesitate to wear on ordinary days. It can mean that this has become something “extraordinary”, and for that, I may convince myself to consider it as “Art”.
☆
Many misunderstand about Sashiko that the completion of Stitching is the end of Sashiko. In truth, especially in the context of how Sashiko was originated, the Completion of Stitching is another beginning of its cloth. At some point, the cloth would need to go through another stitching – which can be another opportunity to have Sashiko, and then welcome another beginning of its cycle. That’s the sustainability we can be proud of throughout Sashiko – and for that, the Supply We daily use (such as threads) are extremely important.
☆
When the goal of Sashiko is “How it Looks”, yes, one can use any thread. If their goal is to display it behind the glass to be the Art, the color & thickness of threads would be the main criteria. That is one form of Sashiko – but it is missing something very core & essential part of Sashiko.
☆
Why Do You Stitch? Why Do You Call it Sashiko? We all have the reasons for these questions, and all I want is to spread the importance of “acknowledging the upstream”. Sashiko can be the Art, yet defining Sashiko as Art without acknowledging the stories can ruin another side of Culture. You are here to learn – so that’s all I ask. My mission is to think how I deliver this message to those who wish to NOT be with what I say.

I started seeing so many photos of Sashiko with Unshin – from those who learned Sashiko in our Workshop. You may wonder how I can tell the difference between Sashiko with or without our teaching. It is interesting that the stitches themselves start communicating once they learn how to ride…

Over the last 4 years or so, many kindly advise me to structure the system of “Certification” or “Atsushi’s Certified Sashiko Teacher” to expand our Sashiko. They advise me to give people a certification so that they can teach Sashiko with less worries (to Cultural Appropriation), and they can pay…
